The Imperial symbol still being used in Russia.
« on: August 22, 2008, 01:25:29 AM »
I just got a package from Russia today and I was amazed to see the Imperial double headed eagle on the postal satchel.  Except the eagle is holding a horn and something else instead of the sceptre etc.

I also noticed in the Russian news which screens here that in the paraliment there is a flag with the double headed eagle, (not on the Imperial flag of course) :D

Also watching the men's gymnastics the Russian team had the double headed eagle on the breast of their outfits. :)

So it is amazing that today they still used the Imperial symbol. Even if it is a variation of it.

It is not the "Imperial symbol".  It is the Russian state coat of arms.  It was revived and modified after the  fall of the Soviet Union.

I don´t think it´s too surprising. The countries with long history as Russia usually stick to some of the old ways or sambols. Czech republic is a republic since 1918 and we still use the crowned double-tailed lion as our national symbol. You can see it also on stamps and coins....

If you compare, the old & new are  diffrent in several ways.  The imperial eagle is black. The republic is gold.  The collar of St Andrew is gone as are the escutcheons- small shields are also gone. The other symbols are universal heraldic devices, representing, justice, unity and authority.
As GD Ally mentioned,  many countries use old, or modified heraldic arms, even though they have long since shedded  a monarchy. This provides a viable link with the country's history and a sense of continuity.  The Soviet Union  created a whole new set of arms, not to obliterate the past, which is  an impossible task and a  mistake, but to symbolise a  totally new system. Although many of those symbols remain, on buildings and such, it is not out of fondness for  the USSR so much, as it is too difficult to remove them, carved in stone as they are, so to speak.

In the restored Andreyevskiy Hall of the Great Kremlin Palace, where Putin was sworn in, there is displayed, above the three imperial thrones, the small arms of the Russian Empire. Among the shields are those of Poland, Georgia and Finland! I am puzzled there hasn't been diplomatic protests.....
Берёзы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.

And the Grand Duchy of Kiev.....

I doubt anyone is going to raise a stink over a century old symbol.

I think Finland should protest against the anti-gay law by making a fuss about this!
(I don't think arch-Catholic Poland is quite there yet. Now that Ireland has fallen, they are after all the знаменосец католической церкви / Vexillifer Ecclesiæ.)

In Georgia this is after all a burning political issue, with both South Ossetia and Abkhazia (just east of Sochi) occupied by Russia. And in Kiev blood is being shed for this very notion as we speak!

Now that Ireland has fallen

What in the dead gods of Krypton are you talking about here?  Are you referring to the fact that Ireland is no longer under the yolk of the Catholic Church?  That's a good thing, IMHO.

Yes, Ireland is no longer an immediate fief of the Pope.

Nor should it be.  It's the 21st Century, not the Middle Ages.
