Yep it's a painting, found in Marvin Lyons' "Nicholas II: the Last Tsar". The name of the artist escapes me at the moment, but I am sure it is a painting, from when they were in captivity.

IMO it's not a painting; it's a doctored photo for a newspaper.  Those often came out looking rather odd.

I agree with Lanie. It looks like a picture. Anastasia looks alot taller and slimmer here.

Yes, it does look like one of those weird touch-ups. I thought I remember seeing it labled as a painting, though, in Marvin Lyons' book. But I sold the darn thing on Ebay so I can't look it up! I remember thinking it looked too good to be a painting. If anyone has that book, do you think you could look it up? I think the picture was more toward the back of the book, with the captivity photos...

The picture is in The Camera and the Tsars, though I saw a nicer copy of it at the Hoover Institution Archives at Stanford University a few years ago.  It looked to me there like a photograph that was doctored for a book back in the 1920's.

I looked it up, and it's not in this book. However, a lot of nice ones are ^_^

I've seen "doctored" pictures of this time, and they look awful. So it being a portrait is quite possible. Anastasia does look to "Real" to be painted  :-/

:o   When that picture first came up on my screen I literally jumped and screamed! Thats the scariest touch-up I have ever seen! Look at her face, Anastasia might not have been  considered a beauty... but.... :P

Although you can't see it in the section Lanie posted, Tatiana also looks a bit different in the touched-up picture. Maybe their faces changed dramatically while they were convalescing from the measles...

Thank you so much, everyone!

The picture I posted looks like "a painting" and that's true--Tatiana looks like someone else...

Here is the webpage from which  I happened to find the picture by the way: http://www.bwbs.de/bwbs_biografie/index.php?l=en&p=wg&m=2&id=709

The one Lanie posted is wonderful! Thank you!

Is the other two girls in the photo Olga and Tatiana?
