Do you write Romanov or Romanoff?
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:08:32 AM »
As the original uses the Cyrillic alphabet, either spelling might be an option. İ was curious who uses which.  İ used to use Romanov but most of the Romanoff family members that İ know use Romanoff.  So İ have switched.  Now İ use Romanoff.

I favor literal letter-by-letter transliterations, so I prefer Romanov.

Does anyone know where the  ff ending came from?

Does anyone know where the ff ending came from?

The Russian pronunciation, which is  [rʌˈmanəf], via French.

I favor literal letter-by-letter transliterations, so I prefer Romanov.

Yes, if you adhere to orthographic transliteration, you logically should write Romaneff. That's why I write Romanov.

The funny thing is that while the Germans would pronounce "Romanov" with a v as Romanoff, they spell it as Romanow, pronounced /romanov/. (But Slavic place-names in eastern Germany that end in -ow, e.g. Güstrow, are actually pronounced with the ending /o:/!)

Nobody who writes 罗曼诺夫 ? :-)

Seems like the Chinese prefer the -ff ending, as the last character transliterates as "fu".

I have a tendency to stick to the first version I came across, unless it is obviously wrong, so Romanov.
