Wasn't Irene (Irina) Xenia's daughter?  Thereby Marie's grand-daughter?  Are we speaking of a different Irene?  Was Irina Alexandrovna's daughter named Irene also?

yes, Irina Alexandrovna's daughter was also Irene.

Yup and she was born in 1915, so this picture is of Maria and her great grand daughter ;-)

BTW  that picture is bad labeled. It was taken in 1915 since Irene was born in march 1915 and she looks still like a little baby in that pic.

a lovely quality image. Thank you for sharing it  According to my information this was taken not long before Alexander III death in late August 1894 at Bielovezh and the people in it are:

sitting on the ground left to right: Grand duke george, nicholas II, pirnce Nicholas of Greece, Grand duchess Olga, Grand Duke Michael.  Alexander II is seated behind Grand Duchess Olga and Empress Marie is sitting next to Alexander
