He really was a darling looking thing. I've always found Marie F so tragic in that respect--the loss of all 4 sons, 4 of her 6 total children. Then 5 of her grandchildren on top of it.

The article says: "He died of meningitis in 1870, one month before his first birthday. "The doctors maintain he did not suffer, but we suffered terribly to see and hear him," His parents had him posthumously photographed and sketched to remember him, therefore it is likely that the only existing photograph of Grand Duke Alexander is the one to the right, of the infant in his coffin surrounded by flowers."

Almost all of Christian IX's children (with the exception of Frederick VIII & Waldemar) suffered the loss of multiple children:

Queen Alexandra--Alexander John and Albert Victor
Empress Marie--Nicholas, Alexander, George, Michael
Thyra--Christian and George
George I--Olga and Alexandra

Indeed. However in Dagmar's case it was the revolution rather than disease that took away Nicky & Misha.

Obviously. Each of the 4 siblings lost 2 children to illness/physical ailment or injuries following an accident in George Wilhelm's case. Marie lost 2 more children additionally. The point was, that's a lot of tragedy.

I thought Alexander died almost after his birth. So if he died a month before his first birthday, there must be more images of him, since their brothers had several images as babies.

Let hope they pop up soon, it would be great see that baby alive. Seeing the PM image, you can tell he was beautiful!

Yes. The thing is that he died so young helped Dagmar get over it a bit more quickly. But I do understand why she became possessive of her surviving children (especially she also lost George).

I'm convinced there are photos of Alexander somewhere.  Maybe just collecting dust in some archives.  I find it hard to believe there were many photos of the other children, but none of him.  That said, I believe Alexander and Marie traveled a great deal during baby Alexander's first year, so there's a possibility there weren't photos.

Maybe there could be some of Alexander and Nicholas together.

On the siteallworldwars.com there is a section on Russo-Japanese war photos by Victor Bulla. One of them is a picture of what I think is Marie-Fed in front of her hospital train with some of her staff. It has the same writing on as a picture of her WW I era train in the Imperial transportation section. I don't have the computer skills to post it here but I thought you all would like to know.

There is no Empress Maria Fedorovna in those photos. Only her daughter GDSs Xenia with the staff of her train, and the other picture shows only staff of the Empress' train.

A new version of the c1881 photo of MF in court dress that surfaced on eBay recently.

Thanks for that photo, Katmaxoz : )  That’s new for me as a photo, but it seems like it became a basis for a portrait made of her (if I recall it right?)

Amazing colored fotos  by the most wonderful Yelena Aleksandrovna. Endless thank you very much!

I think it was. There's a few different versions of this photo which has turned up in the last few years. I suspect there is a full length one that was taken and used for her formal painted portrait done at the same time....bu the photo hasn't surfaced yet..
