Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna - stranded at the outbreak of World War I
« Reply #390 on: March 11, 2014, 12:35:06 PM »
There is an interesting cigarette case coming up for sale in the Tennants  Spring Fine Arts Sale  2014 at the end of the month.
The accompanying letter which can be read on the page detailing the lot ( Lot 394) describes how a Mrs Walter Wall from Charlotte North Carolina was stranded at the hotel Inghleterra. (actually the Hotel d'Angleterre) due to the outbreak of war. At the same time MF arrived, from Berlin, where she had been refused access back to Russia by the Kaiser. It would appear the Dowager Empress and Mrs Wall became acquainted and on leaving for Russia the Dowager Empress made a gift to Mrs Wall of a small cigarette case. The accompanying letter is beautifully written and, I feel, captures the characteristics of MF as described in the book "Little Mother of Russia". The whole story seems to hang together on number of levels. Prince Yussupov confirms his presence in the hotel at the time in his own writings.

I thought some of the members may be interested in seeing this piece which has real Romanov connections and is being auctioned Ina provincial English auction house rather than the lavish Faberge items which come up for sale in Sotheby's and Bonhams. The cigarette case is rather beautiful being well illustrated along with the letter which is dated 1936.

Maria Feodorovna is my favorite Romanov!

Yes she could be selfish and stubborn and maybe she did gossip too much but she really was the perfect consort. She really complemented her husband and softened all the ruff edges. It's amazing how their marriage worked even though as her daughter Olga said they had absolutely NOTHING in common. She may not have been an intellectual like Empress Frederik but she did have a knack for common sense. I think a lot of what she advised her son during the first years of his reign on policy and who to trust was pretty much for the most on point. She definitely seems to be full of contradictions and such but Russia was really lucky to get her!

People usually said her sister Alexandra was the real beauty but I think Maria was very beautiful as well. Although when I look at her picture the first thing that comes to mind is she looks cute. So in my opinion her nickname Minnie really did fit her!

The last years of her life were so sad and even though she had Olga (and her family) with her as well as loyal servants it just seems like such a lonely end, especially for a woman who loved to be the center of attention. I recently received "HVIDØRE - A Royal Retreat" by Coryne Hall/Senta Driver and reading about her last years definitely confirmed my feeling that she was probably one of the most tragic royals ever. To become a window so young, to lose four sons and five grandchildren and then to hear about all though imposter's! Most of all to be run out of and exiled from the country she came to love so much after living there for over 50 years is just terrible and I can't imagine going through any of it. She was definitely a mighty strong woman!

Minny was the most bossy of the three Danish sisters, but she also had a heart and many acts of kindness attributed to her. Compared to her daughter-in-law, at least she knew how to have fun and laugh. Her sense of humor had been recorded in family memoirs already. Moreover she was also a real person who loved beautiful things and gossip...

Maria Feodorovna definitely was bossy and that's probably part of why she was able to survive in the ruthless Russian court. She may have been a small woman but at heart she was a lion. I think Alexandra and Thyra could have been successful in their own way as Russian Empresses too but Maria was definitely the best fit.

She definitely had the heart, wits and common sense to be successful. She was anti-Semite yet showed great kindness to Jews and then supported the liberal ministers during her son's reign because she knew that's what Russia needed despite it being the opposite of what her husband championed. She knew what ways the wind was blowing and what had to be done. If Maria Feodorovna was consort to Nicholas I think a lot things would have ended differently.

Nobody ever put Minny in a corner!!!  :D

Minny was sharp and alert, much more than obstinate & sickly Alicky.
