This picture always makes me laugh. Doesn't it seem like everyone is completely miserable and the only one smiling is Willy? Even though the children have received gifts from him they look as though they are about to cry.

I know! Apparently they all felt uncomfortable around the Kaiser (they had every reason to be - he was about to wage war on their country) but he seems oblivious to this!

I don't agree.They seems rather bored, and Anastasia has a mischievous expression at her face. The only one who seems over the point of staring to cry is Alexei. But maybe it's an optical delusion. I think it was summer and all people feel miserable dressed as they were in the middle of a heat wave. 

As for the war, I think it lasted some time to begin, yet. When the WWI started, Anastasia had 13, and Alexei , 10. They didn't seem to have this age in the pic.

Often it's interesting to enlarge even a well known photo. Here is just Marie of the famous Little Pair in the Tsar's study photo.
What I had not realized until I enlarged it was Marie is writing in this photo. So perhaps they are doing lessons . Amazing loveliness as always

I have always thought that this one was taken somewhere abroad, probably England in 1908.

Oh, I'm sorry. Please excuse my spelling, I was very unclear. I meant to say they have the photo on livadia.org, not that they were in Livadia at the time. Thanks for correcting me

Do you mean Olga or Tatiana? Tatiana is sat on the right next to Anastasia. I wish we knew whose dolls were whose!

Yes, the one where AN is looking up...and is quite close to the camera lens.
