What's most remarkable in that photo is that she had her hair up although she wasn't 16 yet.

Wearing hair up symbolizes the coming of age (becoming 16) of a lady that time.

Indeed. A teenager is almost a modern invention. Back then you were a girl and then a young lady...no in between! I love this photo as well. Could have been taken the same day, certainly the same trip. How fitting Marie is holding a camera!
