The picture in #331 must have been taken after Maria's 16th birthday in 1915.  Her hair is up and her skirt is long.

That is one of my favorite pictures.  

It looks like they are gathered around a steam shovel or some other kind of construction equipment of the time. Or are they on the deck of the Standardt?  It doesn't look like they are standing on the ground but on wood planking.  Of course, even if they were visiting a construction site, planks would have been laid down for them to walk on.

Odd - I thought that in #332 Alix was sullen and shows how big her nose was.  Not at all lovely.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, you must respect the one who saids that Alix was lovely. You could said you didn't like her specially, but not that she looks "sullen" (maybe "swollen"? My english is very clumsy) and had a big nose. I don't like every single person of history I read about, but I will never write that someone is fat, ugly  or big nosed. Nonsense. If I don't like someones face or body, I'll keep the tought to myslef. Alix was not so beatiful as Ella was, but she was very sweet with this dreamer expression in her face. When older, she seemed a much elder lady, but when younger she certainly was a beauty. Maybe with a big nose...

I think that poor Alix is find far from beauty only for her political views ...Just like Dona's case. Most of people sees her as distasteful, fat, big and not stylish at all, only for she was William II's wife ...

completely agree, i think alix was stunning when she was younger, utterly attractive but not in this photo at all, one of the nicest pictures of her imo is the one in the mauve room with tatiana on her lap when T is a baby.

From the look of her age and the way she is dressed, I was wondering if this picture was taken before her "first ball".  The clothing and hair resembles the picture we usually see with Alix sitting in front of a mirror with Ella and Mrs. Orchard attending her.  However we normally don't see her full face as she is looking side faced from the camera.

I know it is shallow to judge anyone by their looks, however, Alix is always said to be a beauty and she and her three sisters were known as the most beautiful princesses in Europe.  Yet I have never seen beauty in either Victoria or Irene.

Again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Jamie (or Jaime) [oh, I’m so sorry if I’ve misspelled your name, RHB]… That wonderful photo was taken circa 1887. She’s 15 that time. Oh soo pretty, indeed!
Aside from "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", the “argument” here reminds me of the adage…”Everybody has beauty but not everyone sees it” ~ Confucius : )
And I agree with you TunaEars, that session in the Mauve Room is definitely one of the nicest!!

as for that photo being of alix's first ball, i don't think so, the dress had a different cut in the photo of alix with mrs orchard, the neck line was much lower, this dress go's right over her shoulders and her hair is pulled more up ontop of her head. and the sleeves were small, not large.

It’s Alix with her sister Irene and her brother in law Henry and their baby.
In my opinion, Ella and Alix were the beauties in the family (sometimes it’s hard to tell which one is Ella and which one is Alix when they were young ladies)
