fresh-faced beauty

From the look of her age and the way she is dressed, I was wondering if this picture was taken before her "first ball".  ...
This photo shows her in a 'carnival costume' for a court ball in 1887. (Hessian State Archive, HStAD Best. D 27 A No. 40/196)
"The Correspondence of the Empress Alexandra of Russia with Ernst Ludwig and Eleonore, Grand Duke and Duchess of Hesse. 1878-1916"
"Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine in Italy - 1893"
"Ludwig IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine - Gebhard Zernin's Festschrift"

Me too! It's lovely... Forgive me for maybe not recognizing someone whom I should recognize, but who is with her?
Those Tanya baby pictures are just darling!

i would say from the age that alix looks the baby would have to be irene's eldest son waldemer, but please anyone feel free to correct me if its sigismund.

I think it's Waldemar, Alix looks so young here... photo taken definitely before she married Nicholas, so it must be Waldemar and his parents :)

violetta asked me to remove her pictures of Alice Grand Duchess of Hesse.  I have done that and also removed all of the posts that questioned the photo and why it was there.

violetta had been meaning to post the picture of Alice to a different thread.

i think that he influenced her quite a lot, and to some extent politically, how much of ludwig do you see in alix? i mean physically as in her appearance? i see little Alice in her and wondered if anyone had a photo of one of ludwig's relatives that was just like alix etc.

Just a note - I have removed the "quote" of the picture.  FA has asked that posters do not "quote" pictures as that takes up quite a bit of bandwidth and can slow down the loading of the threads.  Alixz  :-)

TunaEars, I was just thinking Alix looked a good deal like her father

No one could deny that she looks like Ludwig around the eyes, but I think the rest of her face was her mother's.  Long nose, long face, and -- most notably -- sad expression.

Ernie, on the other hand, looks just like their father...

Alix certainly had her mother's nose, but her face was broader then Alice's, and she had a chin (which Alice - like many of QV's children and grndchildren - unfrotunately did not. But VMH was the only one of Alice's children unlucky enough to inherit that look). Photographs of Alexandra smiling in later years (once she put on a little weight) show a striking resemblance to her father when he smiled, and I see it in some of her children too - notably Marie, oddly enough, who was mainly Romanov in her looks.

Janet, when you alluded to the older Alix smiling , it really clicked how much she looked like Ludwig ( who always seems to be smiling in his photos). He had a marvelous smile and you're right about it being seen in Alix's children

Alexandra's brother Ernst Ludwig (Ernie) and his first wife Victoria Melita (Ducky).
