Exactly, we have the accounts of the guards, but they were Bolsheviks, lying was natural to them.  Yurosky changed his story several times.  It's possible Nicholas could have said that though.

“I am just a plain, common man.”
I found this quote in a website, and according to this website it was his favorite expression with regard to himself in a close family circle.

"A strong country honours its historic traditions"

I heard this in the documentary by Nikita Mikhalkov called "Russians deprived of Russia" (you can watch it on youtube, it's very interesting!!)

In 1926, British Brigadier General W. H-H. Waters, military attaché in Russia has published his memories: Secret and Confidential, the experiences of a military attache.

He evokes several meetings with Tsar Nicholas II, and he quotes this sentence from the emperor: "Yes, but he is my ally, and I do not look at treaty as being a scrap of paper."

In 1916 Romania asks for military aid to Russia. General Waters thinks that we should not answer because it would prevent offensives elsewhere, and this quote is the Tsar's response to the British General.
