It should be something linked to superstition...in the past people believed that cats, especially the blacks, were the embodiment of evil.
It was a nonsense of course, but many people really believed it, and evidently, Maria Sophia was among of them. :- (

About those of the cats, I still can't believe that at 19th century people could still believe in those superstitions that come from the Middle Age!

The people believed that cats were close to the witches, and even I remember to read that also were a common idea that witches could became cats, so people killed cats for believing that perhaps they were killing a witch!!
