I had never seen this photograph before. Can anyone help me on where and when?

There's a similar photo taken on the same occasion in Debrett's book of "Royal Children".  It's just captioned "the 'whispering Wales girls' in their pony carriage about 1873".  Sorry, not very helpful. :(

They do look like pale fairies as they granny (QV) has described them.

Not quite sure how one can judge skin pallor from a sepia photograph of this quality, but who knows?!

I have seen a fuller version of the photo and I believe it was taken at Sandringham.

Duke of Fife, Princess Victoria, Prince of Wales, Lady Alexandra, Duchess of Fife, Duke of York, Princess of Wales holding Lady Maud, Princess Maud, Duchess of York, Prince Christian Victor(?), Princess Irene and Prince Henry

I think it is Christian Victor next to Irene, but not totally sure.

I have a copy of this--I _think_ the caption said Albert of Schleswig-Holstein. One of my favorite photos.

Thanks. Mine didn't say anything but family of the Prince of Wales, and I don't recall seeing any pics of Albert younger without a hat to know if he was balding also.

Yes, he was balding as well. He and Christian Victor greatly resembled each other but Albert's eyes were a bit larger and darker and the face longer. I'm pretty sure this was Albert. Plus, he was in the UK much more than his brother at this time period.

Mine was from an old magazine so it had the ID's, I just don't have the page readily available.

Sadly the public did not know these brothers well. Their sisters were much better known.

I think Christian Victor would've been better known had he lived. He spent so much time overseas on active duty. I believe he would've eventually become a dutiful member of the royal circle once he had retired if he'd been given the chance. Albert spent a good deal of time in Germany as his uncle's heir, WW1 intervened and he died in 1931.

Indeed. "Mary Loo" was the best known since she wrote a book and photographed by Cecil Beaton. Her sister "Thora" was much more private.  Anyway I don't think Queen Alexandra was close to them. She preferred her own Danish & Greek relatives.

No, the Schleswig-Holstein's weren't her favorites for obvious reasons. She could be rather cruel, in fact, to Helena Victoria regarding her looks. (Reminiscent of her and Marie F's treatment of their sister-in-law Louise. They had a bit of the 'mean girls' in them.) Edward VII also wasn't particularly close to his sister Helena. However, George and Mary were close to both female cousins and they were hard-working members of the royal family throughout his reign. Unlike her cousin Toria, Helena Victoria never struck me as particularly embittered by her life--at least, there are no stories relating to her feeling so. She seems like she kept up a busy, productive and full-of-friends life.

I don't think Alexandra was a "mean" girl. She cannot be expected to be nice to someone who stole her father's duchies. Helena was in her mind in the "enemy" camp.
