That is hard to accurately assess, given the corsets of the period, Eric.  They would hold anything in, although Alix was known to be particular about her looks of course.

Well...QV always think Alix was skin and bones to begin with...Alix's brothers and sisters were also slim. Of course no corset can keep "Fat Mary" (mother of May of Teck) or Queen Isabella II of Spain thin...

I've always liked this painting (because even though he isn't in the forefront, like Eddy, George stands out as being so handsome).  However, couldn't the painter have done a better job staging?  Just because the photo had Eddy nearly blocking one of his sisters (while another one hangs out there practically on her own), did the painting have to as well?

Is it in fact a painting?  I thought it was an engraving or other type of reproduction for an illustrated magazine or newspaper - at the time, photographs did not reproduce well or cheaply for mass production, so these line reproductions tended to be used instead, but they tried to reproduce the photos as faithfully as possible - including 'unartistic' poses which actual painters would obviously correct.

The one I posted I doubt that is a painting, it must be an illustration of a newspaper

It is part of a rather large group of poses they did--I'm not sure who they were in mourning for. There is this one (also published in a great photo book on Edward VII when he died), one of George and Victoria, one of Eddy & George and one of the 3 girls together.
They also serve who only stand and wait--John Milton
