In a photo's background
« on: July 24, 2010, 05:41:10 PM »
The other day I was looking a  Romanov photo book and got a slight  jolt when I realized in the background of a photograph of the Tsar and a dog ,was Tatiana and Marie in positions I had seen in Olga's photo album. Marie particularly was  posed just has she was in Olga's close up...the same tree, pose,  everything. Tatiana is near by, sitting  on a stump. The photos were taken at the same time and amazingly, someone taking Nicholas photo, captured Marie just as Olga was also taking her photo. Tatiana has either had hers taken or will be snapped momentary, how the photos were placed in the album will tell us this. I imagine this sort of thing could happen on hikes where photos where taken during rests and many snapped away. But it's grand to see an alternate view, even fuzzy, of well known photo of the girls. ...and if the lens had traveled over to the right alittle more, it would have also caught Olga N. taking Marie's photo. imo. It often pays to give attention to the background of even well known photos

That is really interesting.
I know of another picture of Marie in that odd blouse, and 2 more of Tatiana, but none of Olga or Anastasia. Does anyone have any, or did they just not have polka-dotted blouses?

There are a number  photos of Olga and Anastasia with those blouse...OA and T   are even wearing them in one of the resting after gardening photos at AP in the spring of '17 under sweaters.

here's OTM if not on the same day, certainly the same trip, all wearing the blouse. Which I venture to say was red and white, based on the  type of grey in the b/w photo

also Anastasia wearing her copy of the blouse

There are photos of O M and A wearing them on the ship...with Tatiana in white. It seems she stayed with their mother that day

I've always believed them to be red as well because I saw a hand-tinted photograph in which they were dark red.

Interesting Holly! ...I was guessing based on the grey. But that sounds like case closed.

I imagined them as red as well!
I also imagined the 1910 dotted skirts-and-suspenders to be red, and I just compared the gray, and it does indeed seem like they were red!
I wonder, if someone took a bunch of fabric in all different colors, and laid it out with labels as to what color was what, and took a picture of it in black-and-white, then we could roughly tell what color OTMA's clothes were!
Maybe I'll do that, and post it. It would be an interesting experiment.

That would be interesting! When we pick colours to use , we are mostly guessing, but every bit helps!  Holly, were the skirts tinted blue?.... another guess

The long, polka-dotted dresses OTMA wore circa 1911 were also red.

I'm not sure about the bottoms for these...

I tried out the experiment, but it didn't work very well because I couldn't get the whole layout I'd made in the scope of the camera, and I didn't have all the colors of fabric I wanted. But this is really strange: the navy blue piece of cloth turned out white! Very wierd indeed. I can post the photographs I took if you want, but they didn't turn out too well. I think I'll try again when I can go hunting around the house for more scrap cloth, but maybe it would work with colored pencil or paper, what do you think? Or...I could take a bunch of pictures of larger peices of cloth around our house, such as upolstry or clothes, that are colors I think NAOTMAA would have clothes etc. in.

That's a neat observation, blessOTMA. Kind of eerie in a way!

It's fun to follow the clothes . Here are the dresses Holly is speaking of... Tatiana with the Tsar
and then Tatiana , Alexis and Olga with their young Hesse cousins .

also the blouses spoken about  the first posts , now worn with white skirts for tennis.

Plus  a blouse and shirt from a famous photo of Olga and  Tatiana during lessons with M. Gilliard, turns up on the tennis court

I couldn't resist posting on this forum.  After browsing at the baby photothread.  I saw this pic of Baby Kaiser Willy.

Look closer to his head.  Take note of what you think is a bow or something.   It's actually someone holding the baby's head.

Can anyone tell me how they removed the upper body of the one holdy Willly?

Nice pick up!

If you look carefully you can see a small straight-cut flap of paper on the right side between the edge of the chair and the curtain.

The overlaid paper appears to have been shaped to mimic a pillow while at the same time masking the person whose hands support the child's head.
