Yes I love this one. That is Sacha's brother Vladimir on the far left, I believe. He is in acouple more shots from this visit. He must have gone with his brother to Denmark at the time of the engagment. Also I think that is Christian's father on the far right, Duke Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein.

Can you see the difference in Dagmar's hairstyle in Svetabel's picture, fuller and slightly more wavy at the sides and the band is no longer in evidence...

Hi redlow53,
Thanks for the info about the engagment photo. I had said that I thought the older man on the far right was actually Christian's father Wilhelm. Are you sure it is Louise's father. Wouldnt it make more sence that it would be Christian's father? I just think I read somewere that it was Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein.

Also welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy it here.

Christians father died in 1831, so it couldnt be him in the picture....
Its either Wilhelm of Hessen, who lived in Denmark and died in 1867, or Christians brother, Prince Wilhem of Schleswig-Holstein, who altso lived in Denmark.

Oh you are completly right. I didnt even think about that for some reason. Then I am sure it is Louise's father.

I think Louise is an interesting woman, coming from the obscure province of Hesse-Kassel, one daughter was Queen Consort of England, another Empress Consort of Russia, another married to the ex King Of Hanover's son, the Duke Of Cumberland, another son became King of Greece.

She must have been very proud of her brood.  When I look at her photos I definitely can see Queen Alexandra in her.

I think she might have been an interesting person to have known, like QV, her influence spread over the courts of Europe....

I wouldnt say that she came from an obscure place. She was a Hesse-cassel princess, but was born and lived in Denmark. Her father had high positions in danish society, and her mother was a very respected part of the royal family. The Hesse-Cassel family ranked just after the danish family.
But yes, must have been quit uniqe to have your children in those positions.
Maybe we should start a special thread on their parents!

Well obscure was perhaps the wrong word, but I meant that she came from a family that was not at the center of world power, like the English, or Russian or Prussian  RF's, even though through a series of events she became the heir to the Danish throne.

I think a very interesting and clever woman indeed and of course ambitious for her children to do well as any mother would be.

In a sense, the branches of Hesse got the best of both worlds. They were a favoured marital hunting ground for the bigger powers, so they got to be everybody's in-laws.
Even better: they were small enough to be relatively free from the awesome burdens that come with being a great power.

On the whole, a relatively comfortable situation. I'd take it. ;)

Thyra actually looks much prettier her then she did in her teenage years whereas Waldemar looks a bit odd. His beard certainly improved his appearance when older. He seems to have a very large head.

Maybe its the white hair, but I think she aged very well
