Books on line on Russia in WW I
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:56:42 PM »
The following books are online at archives.org The first 4 are by Stanley washburn correspondent for the Times they are sort of sugarcoated the russian army fighting bravely ect. One wonders why the Revolution happened?. they are easy to read and the first 3 have a number of pictures in them>
"Field Notes From the Russian Front 1914-15"
"The Russian Campaign April-August 1915"
"The Russian Offensive"
"Victory In defeat"                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 on the Axis history Forum's First World War Section on 10 december 2010 there is the "Battle of Lake Naroch 1916' about a failed russian attack in march 1916. This was written around 1938 by a Soviet with an attitude. Some of their WW II/ GPW (Great patriotic war) histories are written in a similiar tone. It is translated by the net into english and is not the easist read in the world.  However, this is the only detailed account of this battle that i know of in English which was critical because it convinced a number of Russians that the german army could not be defeated.
Also on Archives .org is the book "the Russian Turmoil' by Anton i Denikin, one of the White leaders. his account of the Russian revolution

More:
"On the Effectiveness of Military Institutions Volume I World War I" editeted by Alan Millet & Williamson Murray at www.dtic.mil/...oc=GetTRDOC.pdf. A little dry but informative on how various army operated during WW I. Has a chapter "Imperial Russian Forces at War" David  R Jones. I found it on the Great War forums the Eastern Front Section in a posting dealing twith the Austro-Hungarian army. if you want a serious account on how the Russian Imperial army fought the WW I this is a site you should read.
on archive.org:
My War Memories By Erich Ludendorff the memoirs of the german general that pretty much ran the german war on the eastern front 1914-1916 and was pretty much military dictator of germany from 1916-1918
"Under the Black Ensign' R.S. Glaskin-Williams an account of a British Naval officer who was stationed at Archangel during the 1916-1917 period. Very good light reading after the above
