Thanks Marlene. I never would've picked Eugen as a possible since I don't think I'd ever heard his name in connection with a woman. The Scandinavians seemed to make a lot of marital connections between each other though.

It interesting to read about prospective matches at the time. Some, obviously were just rumors, others just mind-boggling. As I was looking through archives it was surprising at the number of times a certain princess might be named (like Patricia of Connaught) and it was always wrong. They couldn't wait to marry some of them off!

It's interesting to put some of the combinations together. The was a newspaper mention of Thyra (Cumberland) and Louis Napoleon the Prince Imperial (also linked to Beatrice) which even the newspaper had to acknowledge was probably untrue. The paper also married off both Daisy and Patsy Connaught to GD Michael. Alexandra Fife to one of the Wales cousins. I can't help but wonder if there was the slightest truth to some stories (possible interest on the parents, etc) or if it was just wishful thinking on the part of the papers.  :)

I wrote a 2 part article for Majesty about such press rumors - (and had to cut so much out.)  I probably printed out every article from the NYT and WPost on engagements.

Prince Eugen was homosexual.

I dont care if Eugen was a homosexual, I think he would have been a catch for Thyra. Although he was a good 15 years her senior.

ella, you mentioned an article about Thyra, Dagmar and Gustav. Can you, or anyone else that may have it please elaborate on it alittle. I hate to ask but I really have a great interest in Fred and Louise's kids and do not have access to that much info on them.

I wish I could get subcriptions to all those great Royalty periodicals (Royalty Digest, Art's, Gilbert's etc....) I have never gotten around to it, one day when I get enough money I know I will.

It might have mattered to Eugen ...

I was only stating that cause I have always thought he was quite handsome, fashionable, chic, etc......

Do you have any idea why they will stop. Are they in financial trouble. I visit their web site from time to time. It is quite a shame  :'(

Yes, RD is shutting down because the number of subscribers has hovered around 800 and the owner has been losing £1000 per month on the magazine since the inception.

This thread is the answer to my prayers!! I've been searching for years to find the "mystery girl" in the checked dress in the large family photo of the mid 1890's.  I always just called her "smiling girl", but now I know it is Louise(jr) on the far right.  This is only my second day on this messageboard and I find it simply amazing.  So many knowledgeable people and so many, many interesting photos. ::)

Welcome speedycat.  :D

I have found that indeed you can post a question on almost anything and someone will know some information on it. It's really wonderful. Hope that you'll post frequently.

Hi grandduchessella!
I just love your user name...Ella is one of my favorite Royals.  I continue to be amazed at the range of topics/subjects here.  With the final publication of my favorite magazine "Royalty Digest" I was really beginning to feel the void left by lack of information/photos on Victorian and Edwardian Era Royals.  I was amazed to see that somenone ( I think svetabel) said she had found one of her photos in a fashion book.....this is my other passion! :o  I am not nearly as knowledgeable as many of the folks here, but I hope to make a lot of new friends and post often.

I have tons of fashion books...mostly 18th, 19th and early 20th Century..of both photos, fashion illustrations, replica catalogs and pattern books.  I use them to make doll clothes.  I make "character dolls" using 11.5 inch and 15 inch fashion dolls (similar to "Barbie") to recreate famous Royal ladies and their beautiful dresses.Willing to share books/scans at anytime!! ;)

This Princess has fascinated me to of late - I was recently in Copenhagen where I copied a lot of newspaper items on Princess Louise's death.  She definately did not commit suicide, but she was unhappy in her marriage more because she missed Denmark. She had been ill since January, before her grandfather's (Christian IX) death.
Iintend on writing something on her once I translate all the info I have.

Princess Louise first met her husband, Prince Friedrich in 1892 when he attend the Golden Wedding celebrations of her grandparents, King Christian IX & Queen Louise.  They became engaged on the Queen's birthday in 1894 (September 7) and got married in Copenhagen on May 5, 1896.  Louise had visited her husband family in Hungary in late 1895.
