Personally I liked the book on Grand Duke Nikolai K., which I find to be well-written and informative. However, after reading a book (in no way related to the Romanovs) by Dr. Robert D. Hare, "Without conscience. The disturbing world of the psychopaths among us", I was most surprised by how much the Grand Duke matched the key symptoms of psychopathy (which include, among others, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of empathy, deceiftul and manipulative, impulsive, poor behaviour controls, need for excitement, lack of responsability, early behaviour problems and adult antisocial behaviour) -and understood why may be some of his relatives choiced to be as far as possible from him.

Dear Rodger,

Well, certainly I wish Grand Duke Nicholas would have behaved like that just when he was a teenager...  but sadly it wasn't the case; as a matter of fact, his behaviour seemed to become increasingly odd as the years passed. Even if he possessed several fine qualities as well, some of things he did as adult were not pleasant at all.

Apart from Prince Michael's book, there is quite interesting information about Grand Duke Nicholas in "Romanov Autumn", by Charlotte Zeepvat, and Jacques Ferrand's "Il est toujurs des Romanovs!", which includes (in French) a summary of the biography of the Grand Duke published in Russian in Saint Petersburg in 1994 by R. G. Krassioukov.

Kind regards
Jorge

Jorgesaenz,

I'd like to hear more about the book.  Could you tell us more?  Does it give a lot of information about his family, etc.?  Does it contain a lot of new information that many of us haven't heard before?

I've always wondered how he and his brother Constantine got along. Does it give any details on this?

I apologize for asking so many questions, but I don't know whether to order the book or not.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

It is a historic novel, but based on archives, memories, etc., as Countess Kleinmichel's Memories, Prince Christopher of Greece's (Michael's father), Fanny Lear's, etc.

I read it in French about two years ago, and it is an entertaining book. It does deal with Nicholas' family, for example the relations between his parents, his sister Queen Olga (one of my favourite Romanovs, but why there is no biography on her   ???) who was the only one to visit him after his disgrace, etc.

The last part is quite interesting, as we see the accomplishments of the Grand Duke in the present Uzbekistan.

Prince Michael talks of his meeting with Princess Iskander, Nicholas' granddaughter, too, and it is moving.

I can recommend this book.

According to amamzon.com, the book THE WHITE NIGHT OF ST PETERSBURG is due out in October 2004. It's listed as fiction (probably similar to the EMpress of Farwells book) and apparently deals with Nicholas Konstantinovich.

I picked up in St. Petersburg a few weekends ago a biography of GDNK by Prince Michael.  It is simply titled Nikolai Konstantinovich and is defintely not fiction.  While I have not read the whole book, it is not bad so far.

A new book will soon appear on the market titled The White Night of St.Petersburg..

Although it is fiction, it appears to have some historic basis. It follows a meeting with Natalya Androssov Iskander Romanov at the funeral ceremony of the Nikolai II in 1998.

It might be fun reading! ;)

The French version, which I bought in Paris a few years ago, is quite enjoyable.  I am glad to see that it has been translated and printed in English as well.

This is interesting because both Michael of Greece and Natalia Iskander are from the Constantinovich branch of the family and even the same generation:

GD Constantine - Queen Olga of Greece - Prince Christopher of Greece - Prince Michael of Greece

GD Constantine - GD Nicholas Constantinovich - Prince Iskander - Natalia Iskander

This book will certainly have further appeal, knowing that Natalya Iskander passed away on the following year after their first meeting in SPb.
