Yes. It was the only photo to mark that marriage.

Apologies if this has been discussed already, but I would be interested to know exactly when Baby Bee and her family returned to England and how much contact they had with their British Royal cousins? Did she for example attend the Coronation of her second cousin King George VI in 1937?

Yes I think so. Most certainly Baby Bee & Ali had a grace & favour residence in England provided by the RF. Baby Bee was also responsible in introduce Olga & Wooley to London society. Queen Mary had hoped that the Prince of Wales would choose one of these princesses as his future wife. It was not to be. However it was in one of these parties that Olga met her future husband Prince Paul of Yugoslavia (who became a good friend of the Duchess of York (later Queen Mum)). Baby Bee's grace & favour residence was cancelled after Buckingham Palace was bombed in the War, King George VI believed it was one of Baby Bee's sons who did the bombing even though there was no proof that he did it. Later it was Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent who visited Bee & Ali in Spain. It was interesting since it was Ali who welcomed Marina to England.

How can George VI have thought that Alvaro or Ataulfo de Orleans, neither of whom battled during the Second World War, bombed BP. Ataulfo was in Spain, Alvaro in Italy, the Infante don Alfonso and the Infanta doña Beatriz were in Sanlucar de Barrameda dring most of the conflict.

Alvaro and his middle brother Alonso were aviators during the Spanish Civil War...but during that conflict they never bombed London either.

Wondering...

According to Sarah Bradford "George VI" The king suspected the bomber had "local knowledge" due to the difficulties in bombing a particular building and suspected one of Beatrices sons. No evidence has been found to support the Kings suspicions.

Apparently Beatrices lease of the grace-and-favour Kings Cottage, in Chiswick, was terminated.

Yes I agree...I don't know why George VI insisted that it was "Bee's son" that bombed London...and Buckingham Palace.

Ah...lovely...another major assumption without sourcing.

Sarah Bradford is not a fons of all royal knowledge...she should not so easily allege facts without proof.

All of the Infanta doña Beatriz's sons studied and were educated in England. They were very fond of their visits to London and NONE fought on the German side during the Second World War. In fact, neither Alvaro nor Ataulfo saw active service during the conflict. If George VI convinced himself of such an idiotic fact, it speaks more about him and his many shortcomings than about the alleged betrayal of the Spanish princes.

Well...Bertie was not known to be a clever man, but basically a good one. The fact is not only found in Sarah's book but other sources as well. It is also a fact that Baby Bee's lease was terminated soon after the bombings. Don't know if she ever visited England after the War, but from the indication that most likely she didn't even though Ena did made it back.

Eric, I don't know...would have to search through my files. The Infanta doña Beatriz and her husband did visit Germany several times after the great war...they stayed mainly in Sanlucar, which is a lovely place, went to Madrid sporadically and also visited Italy and Switzerland for health and family reasons.

In 1959 the couple traveled to Langenburg to attend a gathering hosted by the Infanta's nephew, Fürst Gottfried. By then Gottfried's sister Alexandra lived mostly with her aunt and uncle. The occasion was don Alfonso and doña Beatriz's Golden Wedding anniversary. A large group of royal relations traveled to picturesque Langenburg to be present at this celebration, including Queen Maria of Yugoslavia, the Infanta's niece. There is a full set of images from this gathering in the Eurohistiory Archive. I do believe that it might have been don Beatriz's last trip to Germany as she was extremely frail by then.

Don Alfonso went to Greece in 1962 for the wedding of the Prince of Asturias and Princess Sophie of Greece...the Infanta could not go because she was in failing health.

Thank you all for the replies and the very interesting stories.
I'd be interested to know what happened to Baby Bee in her latter years. She does look quite frail in the Golden Wedding photographs. Of course she far outlived her sisters but what was her health like in her final years?

The Infanta doña Beatriz did not travel outside of Spain much after 1959. She had spent time in Switzerland with her cousin Doña Victoria Eugnia and both traveled together through Italy where they visited places dear to them (Venice, Florence, Rome). In Florence they spent time with their cousins Helen of Romania, Olga of Yugoslavia and Irene of Aosta. In Rome doña Beatriz visited with her son and his family as well.

Back in Spain she traveled around to country, but mainly to Sevilla, Madrid and Granada...while in Sanlucar de Barrameda, where her times of residence became longer and longer, she dedicated most of her time to a charity she had founded many years prior, which was dedicated to supporting unwed mothers and the poor. This became her all-encompassing endeavor.

The Infante don Alfonso did travel out more often. He attended the wedding of the Prince of Asturias and Princess Sophie of Greece, where Queen doña Victoria Eugenia called herself and don Alfonso, "the veterans among the gathering."

Also while in Sanlucar don Alfonso continued flying his aircraft, his wife accompanying him every so often. Yet as the decade of the 1960s progressed, doña Beatriz found herself ever more tired and her outings away from El Botánico (where many royal cousins visited anyhow – and where Princess Alexandra of Hohenlohe-Langenburg,the Infanta's niece, spent longer periods of time living with her aunt and uncle) became rare.

Everyone traveled to El Botánico to see doña Beatriz...she was just too "cansada"(tired) and frail to undertake long voyages of lore. She was still writing frequently to her cousin doña Victoria Eugenia and some of the letters are quite interesting to read.

Yes. Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent also visited her Aunt Bee & Uncle Ali in Spain, by that time George VI was long dead...

Is it me or is anyone else jarred by the familiar use of nicknames for people none of us knew, where friends with or are related to?

This is something I have raised red flags about and as with you, find it jarring. By the number of emails I get from subscribers I know we are not alone, which is a source of much comfort!
