Lady Jersey, appointed lady of the bedchamber, intercepted her letters, lied to her and about her, put Epsom Salts in her supper on her wedding night, humiliated her in public with the Prince, and continued "these delightful and delicate attentions" throughout the first year of her married life.

The Prince of Wales was introduced to his betrothed for the first time on April 5, 1795. Malmesbury was there to relate the scene at St. James’s Palace. “He turned around, retired to a distant part of the apartment, and, calling me to him, said, ‘Harris, I am not well; pray get me a glass of brandy.’” Three days, and many brandies later, the happy couple were married. George spent the wedding night passed out drunk on the floor, with his mistress Lady Jersey in close attendance during the entire honeymoon.

George IV was incessantly unpleasant to his wife.  I think he had already turned against her when Parliament didn't grant the increase in income he wanted for his new marital state.  She was not a hideous young woman, and if he had given her a chance she might have turned out quite differently. Imagine having your new husband's mistress in constant company!  How did he think that was okay?  Given, her personality differed greatly from what was expected of royalty at that time.  However, with more exposure to George III and his family, I think her behavior would have conformed to the current standards.  All in all, though, she turned out to be a very, very strange woman.

Hi Lenelor, I was just wondering where did you read about Amelia being called 'Emily'? I know that George II called his daughter Amelia Emily, but I didn't know George III did the same! Who's your favourite of the princesses? I've always had a soft spot for Augusta, and Mary.

By the by, she was never a 'Georgian princess', but does anyone know anything about the character of Lady Cecilia Underwood, the Duke of Sussex's second wife? Queen Victoria must have been fond of her - she made her Duchess of Inverness in 1840. Then again, Uncle Sussex was her favourite uncle, so that might be why.

Victoria made Lady Cecilia Underwood Duchess of Inverness because Sussex sided with her against Cumberland on some matter of precedence.  It probably had something to to do with Prince Albert and where he sat at table or something inane like that.  All I know about her is that she visited Princess Mary while she was dying, so I guess they were on good terms.  I read about George III calling his daughter Amelia "Emily" in Flora Fraser's group bio.  My favorite of these princesses is Sophia- she seems to be the most independently minded.  I like how she took up for Caroline of Brunswick when the rest of the family (except GIII) detested her.  She could also keep a secret, and liked to learn as she took Italian lessons in her old age.

It's strange how in the Beechey portrait Sophia has golden hair and in the Lawrence portrait she has brunette hair.  Maybe her hair got darker with age.

It's certainly possible it did.  Most blondes do get darker hair as they age.  Mine also got quite a bit darker after I had my son.  If Sophia did have a child as it is widely believed, hers may have as well.

The book "The Men Who Lost America" says George III expanded his military and naval knowledge greatly during the American Revolution hence the map collection.
