Until I was a teenager we lived in houses without central heating. Though there were fireplaces in the bedrooms they were very rarely used. However, it wasn't a problem.

I have always though that people must have smelled pretty bad in the last century.

I am reading "Crime and Punishment" and wondering when and how Raskolnikov is going to take a bath in his cramped garrett, after his numerous Angst-induced fevers and cold sweats!

Jump in the Neva, perhaps? :D   One of these days I will actually get around to reading that book. I just don't know when.
I'm back on my bull****.

All Romanov fans should, because although I've not gotten very far into it, I can easily see how Dostoyevsky foreshadowed the Murder of the IF: Raskolnikov is like Lenin, a sympathetic murderer with a social consciousness. The old pawnbroker he murders is like NII. Is it an evil sin to murder her, even if she is an inherent evil? Her innocent sister can be said to represent collateral victims just like OTMAA.

Do you think NII was an inherent evil?

Do you think NII was an inherent evil?

I confess, poor choice of words on my part. I meant the "inherent badness of autocracy", not NII as a person, and even the evil/badness of autocracy can be debated (as can the evilness/badness of the institution of pawnbrokers.)
