The smiles are already a little bit sad : The marriage is not already a success and Carol deceives openly his wife with sometimes several conquests at once. Indeed, after his marriage with Helen, he sees again Zizi Lambrino while knotting  an idyll with the artist Mireille Marcovici before being crazy about the red-haired person Magda Lupescu.

It was understandable. Helen wanted to get out of the family because of the misfortune it suffered. She went from one unhappy situation to another. Had Carol had been a regular behaving Royal, the marriage would have survived...

Michael was never really comfortable in the official ceremonies. Secret and reserved, he was often sad and worried in public even when he was away from the presence of his mother.

Which is why Missy called Irene Helen's shadow. I think that could be the reason why Irene considered marrying Prince Nicholas of Romania, to be close to her big sister. When the marriages of George (with Elisabetta) and Helen (with Carol) crumbled, Irene broke off the engagement to Nicholas, who was heart brokened.

I don't think Irene was too affected by it, not as much as Nicolas.
