Carol and Helen talking during coronation of 1922 :

At the time, such images disseminated in the international press seemed to attest to the apparent solidity of the young couple. In fact, Carol already deceived his wife after only a few months of marriage, including review of his first wife, Zizi Lambrino.

Helen has often been described as a cold beauty, perhaps was because she was not very talkative. Yet she was almost always smiling, not to order as was sometimes the case for some princesses to get popular, but rather a natural and spontaneous.

It is very interesting that Helen, whom most describe as "warm & friendly" would be term as a "cold beauty". I guess she was very much like her mother, who at times kept her emotion in check. It was this "reserve" that led to Missy blaming Helen on not able to hold on to Carol's heart.

You have to remember that Marie of Romania was an enchantress and could charm the putty out of men's hands. Of course she would felt that Helen was not doing enough in her own point of view.

Knowing the unpredictable and volatile temper of her son, Marie would however expect that the marriage of pure convenience between Helen and Carol, there was a risk not to last.

Yes. Although Missy was very much an optimist in this situation. Which is why she did turn on Helen awhile during the martial problems.

I don't think she looked all the great when she smiled--perhaps this is why in formal portraits and events she is unsmiling. In more natural surroundings, she gave way to her native personality without regard to how to photographed best. Just speculation on my part though.  :)

I think Helen grew more attractive as she matures. Anyway Helen was no match for someone like Magda Lupescu...

Helen appeared rarely actually smiling in portraits or official photographs. But that was more in my opinion, rules and codes of photography at the time, rather than any state of mind on her part - shyness, reserve or other -.

Indeed, most of the official portraits of the time imposed on their models a mine was serious, grave, and a dignified, solemn and stiff, rarely allowing them to smile, or an unobtrusive way. The more relaxed and intimate portraits as those of Marcus Adams were exceptions. Even those of the renowned Cecil Beaton, who was inspired more artists of past centuries as avant-garde, rarely smiling.

Yes King Michael is the only one who could remember the two women today.

Would not Prince Philip have known (or at least have met) Queen Marie and Queen Helen?
Just asking.......
