You mean the husband owns the portrait or the pink court dress ? I think I remember somewhere that Serge liked to see Ella in emeralds.

Her husband had a portrait where she was pictured in a pink court dress.

Does the portrait survives ? They have surviving court dresses of the Dowager Empress, Empress and Grand Duchess Xenia in display before. I wonder if Ella's dresses survive ?

No. That's not a court dress.

Yes. That is not a court dress. But she was wearing the diamond link necklace as in other photos.

Found a new portrait of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth. It's from the collection of Michael Romanoff Ilyinsky, the grandson of Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich. He gave this portrait and some personal collection of the grand duke to the Tsarskoe Selo Museum Reserve. http://eng.tzar.ru/info/info-events/title/?id=3175

Ella's gown looks more like from the time of War & Peace. Maybe her as Natasha ?

It does look as if she's wearing that costume, or at least the artist's interpretation:

Maybe. The clothes in the portrait looks more like First Empire (Empress Josephine & Pauline Bonaparte). Even the furniture fits the period if you look closely.

Maybe Tatiana in Eugene Onegin ? Didn“t they have a fancy-dress ball at Ilinskoye once, with Eugene Onegin-theme ?

I think it could stem from a fancy dress ball look and got painted. How Dimitri got the painting out of Russia is another story...It confirms that Dimitri did adored his Aunt Ella, unlike his sister Mare Paulovna the younger.

That's January 1894 year, ball-party at the Werigins (friends of the Grand Ducal pair). Grand Duke Sergei mentioned that ball and his wife's dress in his letter to his brother Pavel.

Well, Eric, maybe the artist added details to the portrait and was inspired in that image. Artist adding extra details to portraits inspired in certain images are not rare. Take for example this image of Alexandra Iosifovna and kids

Portrait with lots of extra details
