I think it is a portrait of a lady-in-waiting that Ella drew.
I'm back on my bull****.

seems to be a running trait in royalty, there are many talented artists. was ella the only one who could draw well out of her siblings?  alice was a talented artist, i was watching the antiques roadshow (as i often do incase something to do with royalty pops up...i'm just that cool :)   ) , and a woman came along with dresses of alice and...helena i think...but there were also some wonderful sketches that alice had done, so did alice pass this talent on to any of her other children?

also, did ella still paint etc, as much after sergei's death, i don't see any reason why she shouldn't, but most of her art etc i've seen seems to be dated earlier.

Princess Victoria too was a very gifted painter - the children were taught by H.R.Kröh (1845 - 1945) one of the Hessian court painters.
Ernst Ludwig and Alix used to draw as well but I think they were not far as talented as their elder sisters.
I have never seen any drawings by Pcss Irene.

I think it all came from the Prince Consort - an outstanding painter even at the earliest age

interesting. yes, i'd agree with your theory of it all coming from the prince consort. it would be interesting to see if irene did paint/draw etc. and her art is just rarer, or if she never/or couldn't draw?
anyone know?

a bit off topic, but it does say "discussion" and pictures. in 1878, when the diptheria outbreak occured, was ella sent away from darmstadt or was she already away? also where exactly did she stay? and how long for?

When the  diphteria broke out in her family Ella was he only one of the children that did not get. She was sent to her grandmother Princess Elizabeth of Hesse, the mother of her father. I think she stayed there until after the death and burial of her mother.

If speaking exactly - Ella was moved to her granfather's house on the Wilhelminenstrasse November 13 (Viktoria fell ill November 7th). She returned home December 15.
