I think that portrait was not based upon a photo. Ella who loved clothes could have had that dressed especially designed and made for that sitting. In that way, she was an artist too.

Maybe Ella wasnt able to pose. That s another reason why the  artist  coild paint a portrait based in a photo.

BTW we dont even know in which year this portrait was made. What if it was painted in the period when Ella was a nun  or even when she was dead?

I think most likely it was painted before she became a nun. Dimitri who knew her at the height of her beauty and the time when she was still interested in clothes and party. After she became a nun, it would not fit her new station as abbess to pose for paintings.

Found a new portrait of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth. It's from the collection of Michael Romanoff Ilyinsky, the grandson of Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich. He gave this portrait and some personal collection of the grand duke to the Tsarskoe Selo Museum Reserve. http://eng.tzar.ru/info/info-events/title/?id=3175

Well, after looking into the GD Sergei's diary I think the portrait is by Flamenq (or a copy after him) painted in summer 1894. GD Sergei wrote down that Flamenq came to Ilinskoe for Ella's portrait: she would be in the portrait in a dress a la empire (just in January 1894 her empire dress had a great success, see the photo posted above in a few posts before).

Ella was very artistic in dress and appearances. I think she would have made a good actress. I wonder if she had participated in her grandmother's viviant tableaus. I seen photos of Victoria, Irene and even Alicky in some of those.

Ella did participate but I haven't seen any photos of her--just notations. I think QV dragooned pretty much all of her relations into them at one point or the other!

Not quite sure about that. If you look at the Queen Photos. I saw Ducky, Beatrice, Toria & Maud, Victoria (Hesse), Alicky, Luise (Connaught), Mary Loo & Thora...but no Ella...

As I mentioned, it was indicated in diary/journal entries. She also participated in them in Hesse.

Ella's nuns are very striking looking in their habits compare with other nuns. One of them stood close to KK.
