Romanov personalities in fictional characters
« on: November 26, 2010, 06:29:07 PM »
I searched around but I couldn't find anything like this... sorry in advance if I'm wrong. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone looks at any characters in movies, books, tv shows, etc., and thinks that they're like a certain Romanov.

My examples are silly, but they got me thinking, so I'll post them anyway. I was watching the Little Mermaid out of some childhood nostalgia, and Ariel's constant swooning over Eric reminded me of Maria. So then I decided to make a little game and see if I could compare any of the other Disney princesses to her sisters. It's a bit hard to find exact personality traits, but I think Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) is definitely like Olga. "Nose stuck in a book," devotion to her father, etc. When I was trying to think of one for Tatiana, I remembered how during the war she wrote that she was sorry she wasn't a man, because she could be more useful. So then obviously I thought of Mulan. I don't really know if that character's personality really matches Tatiana though, other than the sense of duty. And that they both sported hair shorter than the social norms for women of their time! Also the scene at the beginning of the movie where Mulan sees two children stealing a girl's doll and returns it to the girl reminds me of Tatiana's "governess" ways. Anastasia is especially difficult, because she already has her own animated princess incarnation. But it's not a Disney princess. The only thing I could come up with is kind of an odd choice - Pocahontas. Her name itself meant "little mischief," while Anastasia was nicknamed "imp," and a lot of Pocahontas's daring/wild behaviors at the beginning of the movie remind me of Anastasia. Though the marriage dilemma thing reminds me more of Olga, since she was the only sister to whom that could really apply.

Anyway, they're not perfect examples, and this thread isn't just "Which Disney princesses fit OTMA," it's whatever characters you want and whatever Romanovs you want. Have you ever read a book and imagined any of the characters as looking like a Romanov? Things like that.

Funny... Beauty and the Beast was on TV last night and i was just thinking of that during "Belle" especially when it came to the books!  :)

When I was little and read Little Women I kind of saw a resemblance in the characters to OTMA.
Olga - Jo. Tatiana - Meg. Maria - Beth. Amy - Anastasia.
I think there's a lot of parallels in the personalities.

I related Little Women to OTMA as well! But I always thought of Jo as Anastasia.

Anyone who watched Astrid Lindgren's TV series "Madicken på Junibacken" when they were kids and are reminded of it when they see pictures of OTMA in their Edwardian dresses and surroundings and read about Anastasia's behaviour? :-) Youtube clip.

Imperious Mrs. Fernando Møghe in the Danish TV family saga "Matador" and her spinster daughter Misse remind me of Maria Feodorovna (or her sister Alexandra) and their daughters, who were more afraid of their own mothers than the Germans! Youtube clip: Tante Møghe dies in a street fight with the German occupiers of Korsbæk on her way to the bank.

I do the same. It is interesting to note that Jean Parker who played Marie in "Rasputin and the Empress" also played Beth in the 1933 "Little Women"
