Yeah really neat, thanks for sharing!

Thomas Edison was apparently contacted and sent an X-ray machine to Buffalo in 1901 when President McKinley was shot as one of the bullets was initially undetectable. But the machine was never used.

Too bad it was around twenty years earlier when President Garfield was shot twice. The ultimately fatal bullet in the back was also undetectable. Alexander Graham Bell had invented a metal detector that was used. Problem is Garfield was lying on a bed with metal springs, a rarity at the time, and it scrambled the machine's readings rendering it useless.
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right...

I think there might be a thread somewhere else on this, and discussion came up about Alix's wedding and engagement rings being on the right hand and someone said perhaps that the x ray had been flipped, is that so or did she wear her wedding and engagment rings on the right hand? if so is that something to do with orthodox tradition?

Hi, yes i kow there is another topic with the x-ray picture but it did not have the tsar's x-ray. I think in the orthodox church they wearthe ringthe righthand, I've noticed they both have their rings on their right hand. Even in some countries who are Catholic or protestant they wear the ring on the right hand, it is more common in north Europe.

You're right, the Ring is worn right finger, right hand in Orthodox traditions.

Thanks for posting these, I have found these quite interesting!

Orthodox people wear rings on the right hand. I can't tell you exactly WHY - i would like someone Orthodox could explain this. But i've always tought it should be the same reason because they cross themselves "contrariwise" from other Christians (first right shoulder than the left one).
My guess (but i'm surely wrong and am sorry for it) is that wearing rings on the left hand was a Roman habit, and we know Orthodoxy was much more influences from Greek culture.

But Af's trinkets fascinated me much more than her rings!  bet the lower one, the simplest, was the one she received from Leopold and couldn't take off in Ipatev House, what do you think?

1) Many scholars, including Roman Catholic ones, are of the opinion that the Sign of the Cross made from right to left is the more ancient practice.
See, for example, this entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13785a.htm

Here is an Orthodox Christian source:
http://orthodoxwiki.org/Sign_of_the_Cross

2) Wedding rings are probably worn on the right hand among Orthodox Christians for a number of reasons, many of which may reflect the common preference for right over left in many cultures, including pre-Christian practices.
On a religious level, the sign of the Cross is made with the right hand; oaths are taken with the right hand; the Righteous in the Kingdom of Heaven are spoken of being found on the right hand of God, etc. No doubt many more precedents, practices, and Scriptural references could be found for it too.
