Right, so is the wedding ring worn on the right or left?
?
Orthodox people wear rings on the right hand. I can't tell you exactly WHY - i would like someone Orthodox could explain this. But i've always tought it should be the same reason because they cross themselves "contrariwise" from other Christians (first right shoulder than the left one).
My guess (but i'm surely wrong and am sorry for it) is that wearing rings on the left hand was a Roman habit, and we know Orthodoxy was much more influences from Greek culture.
But Af's trinkets fascinated me much more than her rings! bet the lower one, the simplest, was the one she received from Leopold and couldn't take off in Ipatev House, what do you think?
1) Many scholars, including Roman Catholic ones, are of the opinion that the Sign of the Cross made from right to left is the more ancient practice.
See, for example, this entry in the Catholic Encyclopedia:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/13785a.htmHere is an Orthodox Christian source:
http://orthodoxwiki.org/Sign_of_the_Cross2) Wedding rings are probably worn on the right hand among Orthodox Christians for a number of reasons, many of which may reflect the common preference for right over left in many cultures, including pre-Christian practices.
On a religious level, the sign of the Cross is made with the right hand; oaths are taken with the right hand; the Righteous in the Kingdom of Heaven are spoken of being found on the right hand of God, etc. No doubt many more precedents, practices, and Scriptural references could be found for it too.
