Has anyone seen a film of Nicholas II walking the halls of the Hermitage during the Costume Ball?

Empress Alexandra invited her female servants, maids of different ranks, to attend the ball:

Memories of the 1903 Ball
« Reply #125 on: November 06, 2017, 03:40:34 PM »
Hi all - been a while since I've been in the forum.

I'm looking into the 1903 Ball, specifically what occurred during the two nights in February at the Winter Palace. Previous threads have been mostly about what the guests wore (which is very cool), but I'm hoping to know more about what the guests actually did on both nights.

Any specific memoirs or recollections that you can point me to would be much appreciated. Apologies if this is documented in another thread, but I did a pretty thorough check and mostly saw costume-related posts.

Thanks!

If I can remember correctly, there would have been dancing, with midnight supper and then more dancing afterward, until the wee hours of the morning.

According to Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, it was at this ball that her brother, Grand Duke Michael, lost a crown jewel.  She does not mention what jewel it was, but describes how police conducted a lengthy and thorough search for the jewel afterward, including searching the potted palms decorating the three state rooms in which the ball was held.  She was clearly distressed at the memory.

It was also quite usual at Russian balls for card tables to be set up in an adjoining room so that the less enthusiastic dancers could enjoy themselves with bridge and chat.
