Doubt this wedding would've warranted this in People if not for the William/Kate rebirth of interest in royals:

I confess, I think the couple looked very nice and happy. However, I think uniform is more 'princely' and was, indeed, the standard and tradition during the height of royal power. I also don't think the suit fits him very well--too long and a bit baggy. Still, he has a very nice face--a bit homely but in a good way--and I hope they are very happy together.

Indeed. WAS is the word here.

Georg didn't want to wear military uniform on purpose because of Prussia's military past and he didn't want it to play a role on this wedding. Germany has no monarchy anymore. And I have to say, I love his decision. It wouldn't have fit to the whole wedding AND Georg AND the couple. They are so open-minded, tolerant, the focous was on representing various cultures and religions (Protestants, Catholics, Jews....), they are so modern and modest. All this military stuff wouldn't have felt right there. Love it. And I wish them  all the best.

I was merely referring to a comment calling it "so much more princely " (in general, not limited to this particular event) to not wear uniform, not casting any aspersions on his decision. (Though my personal opinion holds that uniform looks more royal and suits more aristocratic--but, given the situation that's probably more fitting anyway.) Indeed, I agree, uniform would probably look out of place in the royal environment in which this took place. I am certainly aware of when the monarchy ended there--though they certainly includeded their royal past by use of the family tiara. I just feel his tailoring was a bit off and the suit should have fit more snuggly. It just looked a bit baggy on him. No aspersions on him--just his tailor. I know practically nothing about this couple so will take your word on how wonderful they are.  :) As I pointed out, they certainly looked happy and he has a very nice, open countenance and expression.

He certainly has. There is something so boyish about him. :-) grandduchessella, this was not meant personally in any way. I know you were referring to royalty in general I was just trying to explain why Georg decided against it in this case. I am also aware that you know when the German monarchy ended. lol What I was trying to say was that uniforms and such fit more into countries where monarchy is still active.
By the way, the German magazine BUNTE has a great coverage of the wedding with great photos. I would offer to scan some photos but I guess that would be against copyrights.

Does BUNTE have a site with photos--you could always post a link?

As I said, I don't think it would've been mentioned by People magazine at all if not for the uptick in interest following the William/Kate nuptials. I think they underestimate how much people would be interested in some of the other royal weddings and events if they just covered them at all. I would certainly rather read about some of the European royals (even ones without thrones) than the latest reality star exploits.  ::) (Though I do my fair share of reality TV watching. LOL) That's pretty much who is covered now by even a mainstream magazine like People--unless it's Brad & Angelina. If they are so short of 'stars' to do stories on, why not focus on a couple such as this--especially if, as you point out, they live of a life of expanded interests as well as possessing the glamorous backstory.

Personally, it's when an event like this occurs that it peaks my interest in some of the more modern royals. I think if they were covered more, it would work in the fashion of creating more interest--if that makes sense. Instead, the media has to create 'celebrities' (using that term loosely).

I found it weird that no british Royals attended the wedding.  Maybe some did but I could not find it on any published guest list.

Princess Michael was an Austrian Baroness while her late mother-in-law was godmother to a Prussian Prince.

Lord & Lady Nicholas Windsor (son Duke of Kent) were there.

Here is a nice list of the guests:

Lord Nicholas did convert to Catholicism to marry his lady (as did his elder brother the Earl of St Andrews).

Happily all three younger Kents have settled marriages and have avoided any breath of scandal, as have the young Gloucesters, in fact.

The Kents and Gloucesters are always low key (with the exception of maybe Princess Michael of Kent). They are so down the pecking order that hardly matter at all.

Eric

That is a bit unfair! The two Dukes and the Duchess of Gloucester do a fair amount of public duties, and Prince Michael of Kent does a lot for charity.
