Indeed. The impersonality of it all  is a large feature of this time. So many, many  were killed simply because it was much easier to shoot them than think about them for one more moment. I believe they even left Mlle. Schneider and Countess Hendrikova's bodies on the ground where they fell.... their executioners were that eager to simply stop dealing with thier existence. This happened to countless others as well. At such a time, innocence condemns one as much as being guilty... because both require thought.

Mademoiselle Schneider was the Empress's reader, but taught the children Arithmetic, starting during their arrest at the Alexander Palace, and subsequently at Tobolsk.
After the family left for Ekaterinburg the entourage was divided. Mlle. Schneider, Countess Hendrikov, General Tatishev and Volkov were sent to prison, where most of them were subsequently shot.
I have never quite worked out why. The remainder of the suite were spared and set free.

I wonder if the IF ever found out that these people had been shot ?

Not all of them. It depends a bit on how you define suite, but Prince Dolgoruky and General Tatischev were both arrested on arrival in Ekaterinburg and subsequently shot, and Nagorny was also shot during the time in Ekaterinburg.

It seems as though the question of whether who was released and who was shot was somewhat arbitrary (although 'obvious' non-Russians such as the two tutors were released and Prince Dolgoruky seems to have been trying to plan a rescue or escape for the family as marked maps were found in his possession). For example, Baroness Buxhoeveden's release may have been due to her having a foreign name (note, my use of 'may' does not imply that I believe the 'betrayal' stories') but Mlle Schneider also had a foreign name (possible that the Bolsheviks viewed 'Germans' rather differently from 'Danes', however).

Indeed, I think arbitrary is a key word for the times!  I don't believe the Buxhoeveden  'betrayal' stories'....but it's odd  and seemingly uncharacteristic how the Reds allowed her to  finally rejoin the family ...but  only for 3-4 days during the trip to Ekaterinburg....then she was separated from them again. Why allow her  to rejoin them at all unless it was to get information? But clearly Buxhoeveden didn't tell the Reds  about the jewels, since their existence was a big surprise at the murder. However I don't believe the girls would even breathe the word jewels out loud to anyone. They were hardy  veterans of the palaces, if nothing else ,and knew how to keep such a secret.

I believe Catherine Adolfovna Schneider and Countess Hendrikova were shot in September. It's  heartbreaking to think of them in prison all that time after mid July ...undoubtedly having heard the family fate.  Bless them

Me and and old topic again !! I loved the photograph at the dining table, its just such a pity that one cannot see it in a higher resolution, I love trying to work out what was on the table. I am fascinated by small details. Its a pity we cant see the cutlery and the glass objects more clearly, and the way they folded the napkins.

I'm always touched by these photos of personalities from the Imperial Family's world, in their youthful period, before,  however tangentially, they became caught up in dramatic events.And knowing, in hindsight , what awaited them. It's quite eery.

No. She married GDss' secretary Nikolai Stroukov and was able to escape Russia in the 1917-1918 years. The Stroukovs also attended Elizaveta Fedorovna's burial in Jerusalem. Then they lived in Italy. Date of Kitty's death is unkhown, her husband died between 1940 and 1945 years.

that is remarkable...but then so is the whole story of EF's and Sister Barbara's  bodies be recovered and taken there. Thank you for the information
