I found this interesting picture of Alexei taken from the front and the back. Anyone ever seen something like this before?

Some time ago I saw that picture at Russian-Antiques.com and thought it quite unusual (never having seen a picture like that before but thinking it was like the surprise in the 'Tsarevich Egg' of Faberge) and very sweet (since it was Alexei Nikolaevich as a small boy).  It got lost in the shuffle if it was ever pointed out here.

Perhaps they're reference photos for a bust or something?

Quite interesting indeed. I would think the  "sculpture" scenario most likely.
I am a terrible judge of age, especially children, how old do any of you say he was at the time of the photgraph ?

Maybe six. I think it was taken in 1910, because their is a sketch of that picture with a sketch of his sisters on the bottom with was from a picture taken in 1910.  :D

There is a surprise in the 1912 'Tsarevich Egg' of Faberge that features a miniature enameled portrait of Alexei Nikolaevich from the front and back.  If this delightful picture of the boy is dated a few years earlier, this adds to the curiosity factor.

Do you have the link to the antique site where this is posted?

I show the egg pictured as 1912, shaving a couple of years off.

Well I had never seen the photo of the back of his head before, it is very interesting. It was not that uncommon for people to be photographed from the back during this time period. Or to be photographed from the front and the back in the same pose and sitting. Through my searches and collecting of my own family phots I have come accross some of people, primarily young children photographed with their backs to the camera. I am not quite sure why they did it but I know that they did.

Also off the top of my head I can think of two other pictures like this one. One is of Edward VII, his photo was taken from the front and back on one occasion. The other is a picture of Alexei's uncle Ernie with his back towards the camera as a child.
