According to Marvin Lyons, this is the one done for the coins:

I wonder if it's for coins or a portrait ? Has a  feel of being for something . Thanks for posting !

It's kind of mug-shot-ish, isn't it?  : P

Same one, IMO.
And one more in profile, which indeed he hated.

Once again, he is wearing the parade dress of HM Life Guard Hussars.

Does anyone know why Nicholas disliked being seen in profile? His profile looks quite OK to me. In particular, he wasn't chinless, as were a good many royalties of the day - for example, several of the Kaiser's sons.

I seem to recall that he felt that his profile's appearance somehow resembled that of the Emperor Paul I. I haven't taken the time to ponder the alleged salient points for comparison, even though the Emperor Paul had (IMO) a distinct nose and wore no facial hair.                 Regards,  AP.

I wonder if Anna Vyrubova took that picture herself.

I recall the same image at one of the Beinecke albums. Thank you for posting :)

That is a great collection of Nicholas' pics.   He was rather photogenic.
Beautiful faithful Nargony.
Thanks Emily!
