I understand from the bio of GD NN there is a painting by Boris Mikhailovich Kostodiev of Nicholas reviewing the Finnland Guards regiment during late 1905 commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding and it his GD NN in the background. I can't seem to find it. can anyone help me?

This one?
Church Parade of the Finlandsky Guard Regiment, December 12, 1905 (Julian Calendar). The painting is completed in 1906:

Берёзы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.

It looks to me as though Nicholas is carrying a small girl. It can't be one of his daughters, as Alexei is in the picture and quite a bit older. Presumably she is the Colonel-in-Chief of the Finlandsky, but who is it? The only person I can think of in that sort of age bracket is Ioann Konstantinovich's daughter.

No, it has to be Alexey, as the painting shows a ceremony in 1905 and he was made colonel-in-chief of the Finlyandsky Leib-Gvardii at birth in 1904. The boy in the middle of the men must be another grand duke or prince.

Perhaps Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, he was 14 at the time. Certainly looks like him

Hello fellow forum members,
I am in the middle of doing a large oil painting of Tsar Nicholas II in a hussar uniform as pictured in the link.  I have done research and I now know what colors the uniform should be but I can't see al of his medals clearly.  Can anyone please tell me what medals he was wearing?   Also, I would love to paint his troops lined up behind him but I have no idea what they would have worn and would they be on foot or on horseback or a mixture of both?  Any photos or images would be greatly appreciated.  I have been working on this painting for a few years now and I want it to be historically correct.  I hope that the photo below shows up, I am quite new at this :).  Thank you for your time and for your help!

Hello Alexandra

That's quite a project!

I think you need to choose either a mounted or dismounted parade. Nicholas is wearing the uniform of His Majesty's Life Guard Hussars, so you could show him reviewing them on a mounted parade - he would be moving along a line of them at 90 degrees to them. They would all be riding grey horses. You should be able to find quite a lot of pictures of this regiment. The officers and men would essentially be wearing the same uniform as Nicholas, but the insignia would be rather less ornate (certainly for the men).

I think one of the stars he is wearing is the Order of the Garter.

Hope that helps

Ann

Thank you very much Ann! You are an angel.  Once I complete the painting I will share it on this forum for all to see.  I never would have been able to finish it without your help  :)

For those who speak French:

The memories of Henri Gervex's visit to the Russian Court to portray the sovereigns:

There are many charming anecdotes.
