It looks to me like a recent picture, as I rather doubt that a 1914-18 portrait painter would show a monarch smoking.

Yes, indeed, Ann. In other words , painted from a photo, not from a real life sitting. I don't think there are too many royal portraits set , ominously, "up against a wall."
On the other hand, it's an excellent likeness of Nicholas: face and body. Though I don't know about that hands-in-the-pocket bit. Most un-imperial and un-officerlike.

It's Tsar Nicholas doing his best James Dean pose apparently.

If you look at the site Ally posted you will see that the painting shows Nicholas II at the courtyard of the Ipatiev House, his last stop. I truly am amazed by the painting, one simply can imagine him smoking and walking around in the Ipatiev courtyard. His expression seems to be somewhat optimistic and cheerful as I see it.

I agree. Also, the batman needs to get busy with the iron and the pressing cloth!

This meeting took place aboard the Imperial yacht "Shtandart", off the coast off Reval (today's Tallinn, capital of Estonia). Here a nice video of the arrival of the Imperial Family by train to Reval and their transfer by boat to the "Shandart. Interesting to see the difference in "style" between the Empresses: Maria Fedorovna shakes hands with many people ....

True, but then, Empress Alexandra, besides clutching her bouquet of flowers, is also holding her children's hands.

And I think that Empress Maria is actually allowing her hand to be kissed, not shaking hands with the men.

I understand from the bio of GD NN there is a painting by Boris Mikhailovich Kostodiev of Nicholas reviewing the Finnland Guards regiment during late 1905 commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding and it his GD NN in the background. I can't seem to find it. can anyone help me?
