Re the Guard "box", and somewhat O/T:  Each time I see a representation of the Tsarist black/white chevron "Guard Box,"  I am reminded of a pecular instance which I experienced a few years back on one of my trips "off the beaten path" passing one of the numerous (but VERY widely-spaced) villages in rural Russia.  Lo, and behold, out of nowhere, in passing a group of two or three houses, there near the edge of the road was a FULL-SIZED black/white chevroned guard box!  It did not apparently contain anyone or anything (such as a fruit/vegetable stand), did not serve a "gated community," etc.  It was simply just THERE !  I feel certain that it was a reproduction, but to/for what effect, I don't know. Perhaps it was someone's "whimsey."  (I don't recall anyone remarking that the particular spot was significant historically, etc.)  It had no wording/advertisement, etc.  I regret that I did not react in time to photograph it, but we continued along.   Regards, AP.

That sounds really awesome Aleksandr! : )

There is a new video/article out regarding the exhibition. It's wonderful, and covers a lot more than the first video of the exhibition:

Check it Out!

Edit> It seems the server of their website is temporarily down. Maybe too  many Romanov folks flooded it : D Hahaha. I would give it a bit, and hopefully it'll come back up.

It's really nice that this finally happened. The last time I was there in the summer of 2005, they were just working on opening it up to the public, I guess it took them more than 5 years to actually get it to a point where it was ready!

From the photos and videos I've seen of the exhibition, it looks like the children's rooms themselves are as disappointingly bland as the downstairs -- no original furnishings, wallpaper, or drapes. :^(

That's because they really didn't have anything original from there, unfortunately, the same reason they didn't have anything for the downstairs... It was either destroyed, lost or ended up somewhere else, and the AP can't get it back now... It's such a shame.

I wonder how long the painted friezes lasted? They're still visible in the photos and watercolors from the early 1930s.

Speaking of the watercolors -- I'm curious whether this exhibition shows any we haven't seen. There are supposed to be 12 in all, but I've only been able to find 9 of them:

I presume the other three would include Maria & Anastasia's bedroom, and possibly the bathroom.

Same here! I had no idea so many watercolors existed. When were they painted, and by whom?

Re Reply # 33:  Precisely, "Sarushka"!  Perhaps the display team needs "new eyes."  If I remember correctly, our own Bob Atchison has not set foot inside the Allexander Palace in over ten years!  With his background, he could be an invaluable resource to them, IMO, and I wonder why their staff/administration does not utilize him as an on-the spot advisor?  Regards,   AP.

They were painted by Anatoly Yar-Kravchenko in 1931, when the children's rooms were closed and dismantled.

Soooo tiny and tantalizing! Perhaps the Little Pair's bedroom?

That leaves just two more...

I know! I tried blowing it up a bit but it really didn't do anything to help. I was hoping someone would have it.

Though not quite King Tut's  tomb, but I wonder if it was  eerie  for this artist to be in these rooms , basically  untouched for over 20 years .

AH! Now I want to go to Russia and see that! Especially the Big Pair's court dresses. Aren't they beautiful?!
