I saw a really weird World War I movie on YouTube today, a British movie called Deathwatch.

Set in 1917, the story is about a bunch of British soldiers who go over the top and charge a German trench.  All hell breaks loose, and soon this weird fog comes down.  The soldiers suddenly find themselves wandering in a forest, and night has become day.  They find their way to a deserted trench, full of corpses, and capture a German soldier, who babbles about "evil" and "demons".  The soldiers can find no one else around and when they use a crystal radio (an anachronism, as crystal radio did not exist until the 1920's) to try and contact their base, they hear that their whole company was wiped out in the charge.  As the movie progresses, it gets weirder and weirder, and it turns out that the German prisoner is not what he seems.

This is a good movie, I recommend it.

"A Little Princess" -1995 It's a simple movie but the costumes and acting are great and it does show scenes of the war.

According to the Axis history forums WW I section there is a german Movie coming out in january 2013 Die manner der Emden about the WW I raider. They have a clip of it and it looks pretty good. I also have some comments on the movie "Warhorse" I don't think the horse in the movie could have lasted in the german army until 1918 because by this time the Germans were so short of horses that many of their artillery pieces were being towed by oxen and in some cases cattle. Artillerymen who used to ride horses were riding bicycles and most of the german armies cavalry divisions were dismounted infantry divisions. No horses. Just thought you'd like to know.

according to the aerodrome.com Die Maenner der Emden is going to released with English subtitles as odessey of heros. Also on you tube are two documentaries on the Emden (English) and S.M.S. Emden (German). The Emden sank the Russian crusier Zhemchug which it surprised at anchor and unprepared. With the Captain ashore with a lady. Not a good moment in Russian naval history. There is more about this incident on the axis history forum.

Arhives.org has the books "The Emden" and "The Ayesha" by Hellmuth Von Mucke on this ship. For those interested in this sort of Boy's own" reading. More on the Zhemchug the CO Commander Baron A.I. Cherkassov was ashore with his wife or another woman at the time of the attack. He also gave a good part of the crew shore leave. The men left aboard were having a party and supposedly had 60 chinese prostitutes on board at this time. Also the torpedos were disarmed and all the ammuntion was locked up except for 12 rounds per gun. After the attack started the crew was able to get off a few shots which hit a merchant ship not the Emden. Cherkassov and the XO Lt N.V. Kuliban were both courtmartialed Cherkassov was sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and Kuliban recieved an 18 month jail sentence. They both lost their ranks, medals and status as members of the Russian Nobilty. the Tsar Nicholas II communted their sentences. Cherkassov served as a seaman on the Caucasus front won the St george cross and was restored to rank. After the revolutions in 1918 his estates were burned and he went into exile and died in france in 1942. Kuliban served as  a seaman in the Marine brigade near Riga where he too won the St george cross and was reinstated to rank. Sadly he died of wounds recieved during the feburary/March 1917 revolution. it looks like he was one of number of hated naval officers killed by their men at this time.
As for the movie "My Boy Jack" I have read that John Kipling was seen to be hit by fragments from artillery fire and staggered off to die.

Tim - I was so intrigued by your posting on this move that I found a cheap copy and bought it.  I don't know if all the copies are as dark as mine is, but sometimes the scenes were almost too dark to make out what was happening. I probably should watch it on a bigger TV at a better angle.

I did like the plot and whoever wrote it had a good imagination.

Sort of a Twilight Zone twist at the end. I would recommend it to anyone who likes that kind of thing.

Cavalcade (1933)

It actually kind of a montage of events such as WWI and Titanic.

It won the Academy Award for Best Picture that year.
Hatred – this is a disgusting feeling. Yes, there is sport gambling, there is a striving to win. But to hate someone – this is awful! I think, that first of all you have to learn to respect your rival. -- Evgeni Plushenko
