How Did You Get Interested In The Romanovs? . . . Part 2
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:42:14 PM »
Hi all! As some of you might know, there's already been another thread on this, but it hasn't been replied to since, like, 2005, so I figured: Why not just make a new one? So here goes: =D

I was interested in the French Revolution as a kid, and finally I was told (meaning, like, I was actually talked to) a story about a princess named Anastasia who was murdered but who's body had never been found. Can you believe I actually had a dream about her that night? Well, the next day I went to school and checked out the "N" encyclopedia from the library, just so I could see their picture. No lie. Then I read the Royal Diaries, and the Lost Crown, and Nicholas and Alexandra and all the other resourceful books of mine.

I just watched Anastasia the cartoon movie when I was a little kid and asked my mother if it was based on a true story, and she said yes, and alas, my romanov passion was born! Went from Wikipedia to encyclopedias to forums to Romanovy VS to other books :)

For me it was reading the Massie book as a teenager in the late 60's... and the photo section of the book got me right off. But there are great engines of Romanov interest that bring people of certain ages to the family . Massie's  book was a huge one....Anastasia the cartoon  was  another important one  for a later  generation...and you tube is an amazing one  still others!

Been interested since the 1970's.  I love this board, anywhere else, you mention Romanov's and you would most likely get "Huh? What!?"

I used to live in Russia, and 'I remember on my tenth birthday my grandmother wanted to take me to see the palace. I remembered walking through the halls. It wasn't what I expected, being a ten year old I imagined it would be full of furniture and gemstones, it was rather empty. But, I still remember to this day the mysterious feeling that was in there. When I returned home, I asked my grandmother what happened to them. She said "You've never heard the story of the last of the imperial family?" I shook my head no. Then, she sat me down and told me what happened to them, and that her grandmother had shared stories with her of seeing the grand duchesses at a parade and how the were so pretty. Ever since then, I have been fascinated with the subject. :)

That's a great story. As far as I'm concerned you are part of living line so to speak...it's great to have this history  told orally in this fashion.  A family treasure  pasted on

I actually found a very old book on Rasputin at a local library booksale (sadly, I no longer have it), and inside were pictures of the Imperial family.  Of course, I knew enough Russian history to know that they had been killed by the Bolsheviks, but I had never read up on their lives before the Revolution.  That changed mostly because I saw a photograph of Olga, and I thought she was simply gorgeous--something about her eyes just drew me in.  I am anything but a monarchist, but the idea of that beautiful girl's life ending so prematurely in such a horrible, gruesome manner really struck a chord with me, and my very first published poem was written in her memory.

I posted the poem somewhere in the OTMA Poetry section of Having Fun here on the Forum if you want to read it, but you may have to go back a few years ;)

Ohh!! I see that many of us became interested in Romanovs thanks to Grand Duchess Anastasia!!! :-) The same happened to me!! When I was 10 years old I watched the documentary "Anastasia alive or dead" and I became fascinated with the story of the last Russian Imperial Family, as well as I felt quite sad for their horrible end -I couldn't take off their story of my mind in many days and hated Lenin very much!-. I thought that the four Grand Duchesses were really beautiful and charming, although they focused more in Anastasia.  I wanted to know more about them but sadly I didn't have much sources available (although when I found a photo and a little biography on Nicholas II in a old dictionary I got really excited) and I left my interest for many years until I came here, and I must say that I actually came thanks to the thread about Empress Sissi, but short time after I started checking the threads about OTMA (this made me to remember my childhood!!).

It all started in 2006 when I watched a documentary about them. At the same time, I watched the animated movie Anastasia.

That movie has been a huge engine to bring many to the family...to a remarkable degree

Indeed! The Anastasia cartoon was my favorite movie when I was little. I watched it so many times I could probably lip synch the entire thing.
I'm back on my bull****.

Yeah, it was the Anastasia cartoon that probably got me interested aswell. However, I was young, I know knew there was a Tsar, Tsarina and Anastasia, so I didn't show much interest. However, a couple of years back, I started reading about the Romanov family again! And that kicked off my interest. I do think that Anastasia did start off many people's interest with the Romanov family.
