in 1890 his mother was heir to Queen Wilhelmina and on her death 1897 he was next in line to the Dutch throne . We have had this subject '"unpopular sadist who drove his wife to suicide"  but NOBODY has given us any examples of his brutality and why he was so reviled....was it rumours started by the Dutch who feared him becoming King?

Well, I found this:

http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/Schaumburg_Lippe_Royal_Family.htm

See 27.2411 - The early death of Karoline is shrouded in some mystery, some sources say she died in childbirth and other say she took her own life. Her husband Wilhelm Ernst was known to be a sadist and on the day of his abdication was advised he was the "most unpopular prince in Germany".

yes it's a chestnut that keeps coming up. But to have been the "most unpopular prince in Germany" we want some examples...driving his carriage over widows and orphans, drinking the blood of nuns  etc...All i've ever read was that he was very rude and loud at the dinner table. Interesting about his wife leaving court with his support,  and against his mother ...any more information on that?

I do not know why my book would be cited as Caroline was not a QVD or married to a QVD

Does anyone know anything about the last Grand Duke? He seems to have a very bad repuation, but I've never heard anything specific about why that should be!
