First deputy commandant Ukraintsev
« on: January 30, 2009, 01:47:42 PM »
According to FOTR, Avdeyev's first deputy commandant of the Ipatiev house, Konstantin Ukraintsev, was familiar to the imperial family:

"During the imperial family's annual holidays at Livadia, Ukraintsev had served as a beater for Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich on hunts, and also played with the emperor's sister Grand Duchess Olga."

What exactly is a "beater"? It sounds rather like a job the ASPCA would not approve of....

Beaters are the men who go into the forest and make a lot of noise to drive the game out into the open for the shooters.

Thanks.

I wonder how old he was at the time he served in the Ipatiev house? Perhaps around GD Olga A's age, if they'd been playmates.

I thought a  beater is a torturer (hehehe, illogical analysis)

Thanks for the info, Robert Hall.

Amazing colored fotos  by the most wonderful Yelena Aleksandrovna. Endless thank you very much!

That's not far from what I'd thought -- if the first shot doesn't kill the critter, call the beater! ;-)

Do we know anything more about him? In one of the appendix in FOTR there are 2 Ukraintsev: Aleksandr U and Konstantin Ivanovich U., assistant to Avdeev. Is the latter our men?
