Franz Josef may have been an Emperor, but he was an unpretentious man and preferred to live simply, which I find endearing. I rather liked his modest bed when I visited the Hofburg (though I did read somewhere that he had the very latest in interior-sprung mattresses!).

Mind you, I only get up at 5am when I have to!

beleive me i don't do it for my pleasure^^" I have to go to work and I wake up at around 5:50 every day
so if i could be an empress (cause an emperor maybe has to follow state affairs) beleive me the last thing i'll do is wake up early^_____^

It's interesting to note how many Emperors apparently slept on rather unassuming beds (probably as a result of their early military training). Nicholas I slept on a camp bed. I heard somewhere that Wilhelm I did as well.

I think I've read she liked to have breakfast with tea. She liked very strong tea. I don't remember if I've read it in Greg King's book "The Last Empress", but I guess it was there.

"Eggs and crisp bacon," was apparently a favorite of Alexandra Feodrovna, as stated in that book...Greg King sources "Ibid" for that, whoever that is...

"Ibid" is the way of saying the source is the same as the source listed before it. Saves the trouble of spelling the same book/article/interview out several times consecutively.  : )

I don't think she was a vegetarian...Where did you read it? What I've read is that she was not too interested in food and just would ate what they put in front of her. The Tsar liked classical and folkloric Russian dishes as Kasha, but Alix didn't care about meals.

I think it was in one of her diaries from 1903/1904. She mentions that the doctors said that she should no longer eat anything from animals (meat). I'll see if I can find the reference.

I read that she ate macaroni - what we Americans would call "elbow macaroni".  She did give up meat and, of course, she observed all of the Orthodox fasting days when meat and dairy products are not allowed.

It was in the chapter about their early married life, so that would be before 1903.
