I am the author of Former People: Final Days of the Russian Aristocracy, due out in the US with Farrar, Straus and Giroux and in the UK with Macmillan in October. I hope the fans of Alexander Palace will take a look at it. It took me many years to research and write. I tracked down descendants of the great aristocratic families in countries throughout the world and have been given access to incredible private letters, memoirs, diaries and photographs. The fate of the Russian aristocracy, which the book traces from roughly 1900 to 1941, is so tragic, so moving and so important.

Former People: The Final Days of the Russian Aristocracy [Hardcover]

Douglas Smith (Author)

Publication Date: October 2, 2012

Epic in scope, precise in detail, and heart-breaking in its human drama, Former People is the first book to recount the history of the aristocracy caught up in the maelstrom of the Bolshevik Revolution and the creation of Stalin’s Russia. Filled with chilling tales of looted palaces and burning estates, of desperate flights in the night from marauding peasants and Red Army soldiers, of imprisonment, exile, and execution, it is the story of how a centuries’-old elite, famous for its glittering wealth, its service to the Tsar and Empire, and its promotion of the arts and culture, was dispossessed and destroyed along with the rest of old Russia.

Yet Former People is also a story of survival and accommodation, of how many of the tsarist ruling class—so-called “former people” and “class enemies”—overcame the psychological wounds inflicted by the loss of their world and decades of repression as they struggled to find a place for themselves and their families in the new, hostile order of the Soviet Union. Chronicling the fate of two great aristocratic families—the Sheremetevs and the Golitsyns—it reveals how even in the darkest depths of the terror, daily life went on.

The fates of these families--Sheremetevs, Golitsyns, Yusupovs, Dolgorukys, etc--defy belief. My book examines the story of the entire nobility, but chiefly follows the lives of the Counts Sheremetev and Princes Golitsyns who stayed in Russia. I hope you'll like it!

Thank you, Douglas

WOW! Well, I finally got round to reading The Romanov Conspiracy. Actually, I read it TWICE. It ranks not only among the best books I have read, but also the best books on the Romanovs.
It's a story about a last ditch rescue attempt to save the Romanovs orm execution and it's based on much fact, apparently.

I'm posting some info here on the author, and on the video for the book, published by Simon &Schuster, so that people can see the excellent reviews for themselves.

Get more on Glenn Meade at SimonandSchuster.com: http://authors.simonandschuster.com/Glenn-Meade/76420929?mcd=vd_youtube

It's simply a tremendous book. The story of the Romanov executions is well known but Meade inbues it with great a fresh eye, and takes the reader on an incredible journey
that keeps them not only on the edge o their seat, but desperately interested in the other main characters in the story, apart from the Romanovs.
What makes this stroy so incredibly good is the fact that many of the characters existed--I actually drove to the town of Collon yesterday to see the graves o one o the protagonists!!
I'd be very interested to hear what others think o this book. Right now, it's my favourite Romanov book ever!

The Lost Romanov Icon and the Enigma of Anastasia by Carlos Mundy and Marie Stravlo.......

I visited his website. "God Save the Tsar" blasting out of my speakers that I didn't realize were turned up almost knocked me out of my chair, lol. It didn't take me long to find and read the following...

"The plot brings to the attention two mysteries together: The real fate of the youngest daughter of the last Russian Czar, still considered  one of the most talked about mysteries of all times, (despite of the identification by the Russian government of  some bones unburied in Ekaterinburg  1991, and the still “unbelievable” results of DNA tests performed in England in 1994)"

Automatic disqualifier for me! "Some bones unburied", and "still unbelievable results of DNA tests"? Ugh, this again?!

There are still some very deluded people around.

I used to do some reviewing for a historical novels website, and got a book to review published in 2008 ('The Fallen Kings by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, one of a lengthy series of huge family sagas). Even at that point the author had Alexandra, Alexei and the girls being taken away from Ekaterinburg by the Bolsheviks before Nicholas was shot.

During his mission Rodney discovers not only the truth about Anastasia, but also that The Vatican was involved in the rescue operation of the Imperial Family in 1918. The truth about their survival has been suppressed from the public.
