Is 'soused baby' an alternative to the well-known Royal Navy dish of 'dead baby'?

I have to admit that I have tried the O'Brian books several times, but just can't get into them (I have the same problem with 'Lord of the Rings').

I know what spotted  dick is, but don't think I have ever heard of soused or dead baby. Sounds disgusting.
 And speaking of cook books, one of my new arrivals is 100 recipes from the Court of Louis XIV.  As the Court cooked for hundreds, these recipes have been modernised  for 4-6. This is the English edition, the French is still on the way.
 I have no problem with other people using Kindles, I see it all the time, especially on planes, as I travel so much. It does seem more compact than carrying a book around. I normally have a magazine- BBC History and perhaps a paperback.  I usually buy books when I am away, and those I carry back. But Kindle is just not for me.

I'm relieved when I see a kid with a book. They could be playing some nonsense game on the Kindle or surfing the web but with a book you know that they are at least having to READ something!

GDElla, have you thought of renting book storage ? Not regular storgae lockers but the ones that rent by shelf space. Libraries use them. Well ventilated, climate controlled for printed matter, etc.  And, if you know where you are going to eventualyy settle down,  you could find such a facility in that area.
 I am currently trying to flog off my beloved old set [1962] of Enc. Bri. but no one wants it. It is too heavy to ship so will probably go to some pub decorator to fill shelves.
 My mysteries are special to me as I know/knew  most of the authors, some are even autographed. Many are complete collections. They are in one of the annexes and hard to get to with all the clutter down there, but will eventually get moved up here, somewhere.

That's a good idea, Robert. I hadn't thought of it. We know where we'll be settling down once Bob retires so that may be a good option to pursue.  Regardless of the weight allowance, much of our stuff will have to go into storage if he gets an overseas follow-on from his deployment. (They are supposed to give preferential assignments to those separated from their families for 365+ tours but we'll see.) Most military live on base, at least in Germany, and that housing is tiny! Though I will be down one kid at that point (Kate being in college by then) so I guess I can use her room for book storage. : )

I was going to pass my kindle onto Kate when I got my ipad since I use the kindle app. She prefers to read books the old fashioned way though. : )  I read very disposable books for leisure reading and always had huge stacks in my TBR piles so I don't need to have them taking up space. The kindle works well for me in that respects. Plus, when I travel, I bring with me my 1000+ ebooks of all genres so I'm never short of something to read! Our library has ebook check out as well so I just borrowed Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey (which had been on my to buy list) as well as 2 others.

I don't like Kindles either....Kindle books seem too disposable, if you know what I mean.  I prefer an actual book that I can hold in my hands, read, leaf through the pictures, and keep it forever.  To me, books are like old friends.  I have quite a collection.

I quote you here, Ann. For me, is wonderful to have more than a book without worrying about the weight in the lagguage, but handle a real book, smell it and turn the pages remains priceless.
Alas, there are so many R-ov book out there, written in the 20s or so, which cost so much and are not available in the library in my country, but have a pdf version, i really needed a kindle.

I have so many physical books to read, I just haven't gotten around to an ebook reader, though for the traveler, it's a great idea. My older sister disliked the idea of them, was gifted one and now has the fervor of the converted. She says it's easier on her eyes. When the topic of many books come up, I always think of Kenneth Clark's saying about a large, personal library." One starts off believing  you will read each book and eventually comes to believe you have " But they DO become friends indeed and are often hard to send off

However, the top  prize goes to this fabulous art book from Thames & Hudson 2012, translated from  the French version. 400 pages on the Treasures of Tsarskoe  Selo.
  After a brief intro about the various occupants over the reigns, right into lavish illustrations. New photographs  with archival matches. And the new ones are simply beautiful.
 This is a large volume, boxed and heavy. I ordered from Amazon pre-pub and did not pay postage, thankfully, it would cost a lot to ship this thing.

I bought the book. Couldn't resist the temptation. My copy just arrived and Robert's absolutely right -- this one's a stunner, no question. Usually I'm disappointed when the AP comprises only a small portion of a larger volume, but not this time. The book as a whole is too gorgeous to begrudge on that point. (And honestly, until Bob's book and/or those newly found autochromes of the AP are published, we've already seen pretty much all the visuals there are to see on the AP.)

Question folks! Has anyone purchased Stephen R. de Angelis's diary work? I found out today that besides N&A's diaries, he's also published MF's diaries and an account by a Bodyguard to the Empress. His prints seem to be small run, so if they're good I would like to snag them before they disappear. Before I do though, I would truly value a review of this author, and his works by you fine folks.

Robert Golden's new book, "Relatively Royal...more or less" is now out;  and may be purchased through Majesty Magazine or Eurohistory or Ted Rosvall.
I'm sure that Hoogstratten and Amazon have it also.

I have my copy and it is delightful to read as Mr. Golden knew several of these participants personnally!!  Many pictures are new, which is always a treasure.
