Confused about Kaulbach portraits?
« on: September 25, 2011, 02:40:08 PM »
Was searching google and found this:
http://www.pallasweb.com/blog.html?pid=62
Was interesting until I saw the captions on the infamous OTMA portraits. Anastasia and Maria? Then, slightly lower down, they show the real Anastasia portrait under what I think is actually Olga.
I think that this has been discussed on the forum before, but I can't find it. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me?
Thanks, GDI.

Yes, it has been discussed before, on regarding those nice pastel pictures, and which GD was painted in Maple room. Try search using 'Search' engine by entering - Kaulbach. I think that Anastasia's one was entirely different. Also, Sarushka would know, or Larry.

It's been discussed, but apparently not in its own thread. I modified the title of this thread to make it easier to find later.

Anyway, here are the Kaulbach portraits of the girls that I'm aware of:

IMO they're (l to r) Olga, Tatiana, and Maria, but I don't know for sure if that's correct. I believe GD Ally does, though.

Thanks Sarushka, and I'd say same. Also, I am 97% sure that someone posted Anastasia's one, the quality is not so good, and it was zoomed.

All four of the GDss portraits are visible on the wall in this photo from 1914, as well as a Kaulbach Aleksei:

Anastasia's is possibly on the lower left side of the cabinet.

The IF took all the Kaulbach portraits of the children from the Maple room with them into exile, where they hung on the wall of the empress's drawing room in Tobolsk. Aleksei's in the center of the left wall, and you can barely make out the two smaller GDss below that. Another larger portrait of one of the girls in on the right wall:

I've always believed they were (l to r) Maria, Olga, and Maria. I think he did Maria twice for some reason.

Out of context the leftmost could be Marie; in context with the other two, it seems likely Olga. Her features are somewhat sharper than Marie's classic rounder face and cheeks, as well as her 'saucers'  of course.

I agree.

I feel the same about the center photo, actually -- alone it looks like Olga, but compared to the other two it seems most similar to Tatiana.

I agree. I use to think the portrait with the sailor hat was Olga...but have come to believe it's TN . Somewhere I saw them large and it's easier to see  who is who then...actually he caught their characteristic expressions as well as their features  very well imo

Just to comment about these Kaulbachs overall. They're really extremely good. They not only look like their subjects but they capture their  expressions perfectly as blessOTMA notes. Olga a little intent; Tatiana at ease and content; Marie happy and a little flirtatious (yes, it's possible at that age). But just to say it: getting young children to sit  still for a portrait is incredibly hard. It's just not natural for a child to sit and not move, especially while holding a fixed expression. And especially a generally happy expression at that. We non-painters sometimes take the quality of portraits for granted, but it's really HARD. These are golden ,I must say.
