Okay, so I'm stuck on Alexei's diary's translation into French, from Le Tsarevitch
The phrase:
Mais  au lieu de consigner, ses souvenirs dans un joli cahier relié, comme il le faisait auparavant, il le note dans un carnet de moleskine, plus exactement c'est dans celui de Gilliard qu'il écrit.

My translation:
But instead of recording his memories in a pretty notebook bound like before, he wrote the notes in a book of imitation leather, more exactly it is in Gilliard's which he wrote in.

Aleksei's 1916 diary is published in Olga Barkovets' 'Tsesarevich' from 1998 in Russian, but it is copyrighted by GARF! So one must not publish it without permission. I am not into law honestly. We have some kind French speakers that would help you. Aleksei wanted to keep a diary, so Empress gave him one as a present in late 1915/early 1916, it is red one, starts on January 1st and finishes on December 24th. Due to his illnes, his sisters OTM, Empress, and Petrov did some entries instead of him.

More properly: "But, instead of recording his memories in a prettily bound notebook, as he had done before, he noted them down in an imitation leather book, more exactly, he wrote them in Gilliard's!" (there is an understood yet unspoken point, lost in the English but clear in the French that the "joli cahier relié" is of more expensive quality whereas "un carnet de moleskine" is clearly something cheap and "dimestore"..)

Is Aleksei's 1916 diary included in Le Tsarevitch? I was only aware of the 1918 diary in chapter 15, but since I don't speak French I haven't paid a lot of attention to the rest of the book.

I believe it was also translated into French in "Alexis; enfent martyr" by Eugenie de Grece. That's a French translation, so who would it belong to? I didn't know about it being published in Russian, muchless copyrighted.

Okay, so, my friend is interested in the Romanovs too, and she gave me a French entry to translate which she said was from Le Tsarevitch, and it was his 1916 diary! Katie, I'm so mad! (I'm sure she just mispoke though, she has dyslexia, and could have accidentaly made a mistake with it.) okay, all forgivin.

Yes, what the sentence really means, in modern English is: "But, instead of writing his diary in the pretty, beautifully bound notebook he used to use, he started writing in Gilliard's cheap imitation leather notebook"

It's out of print, so you'll have to search around for a used copy like Sunny did. I found mine through Alibris or Abebooks.

The translation belongs to the translator. Literary rights to the text itself belong to whoever owns the diary. (Usually the original author's heirs retain the copyright, but of course Aleksei had no heirs.

I got my copy from French eBay  and using Google French to speak to the seller about mailing it to the US....worked for me =)

I think I am confused. I have 'l'enfant martyre", but I thought that there was another book in Russian - Tsarevich by Olga Barkovets. If so, where can I buy this one.
