Maria named after?
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:56:51 PM »
I know that Maria was most likely named after her grandmother, Empress Marie Feodorovna, but I was wondering if anyone thinks that there is any chance that Alix wanted to name Maria this because Alix's little sister's name was Marie.  I remember reading somewhere that Alix and May were very close as small children.  What do you think?

The first Nicholas and Alexandra also had at least two girls named Olga and Maria. Maybe Nicholas was copying them, too. That's why Alix was given the name Alexandra.

I supposed that their parents named her Marie at honour of her grandma, the Empress Marie
Feodorovna, I never thought in other reason ;-)

Maria Nicholievna was definitely named for her grandmother, the Dowager Empress.

Do we know if she was a favourite of her grandmamma for that reason maybe?

Maria Fyodorovna´s favourite grandchild was Princess Irina Alexandrovna. She did love OTMAA too, but none in specially.

You should think i'm mad, but i've always thought that Maria wasn't name just after her grandmother, but also after Alix's baby (and beloved) sister, May.

I think that it was a mixture of both, for Marie Feodorovna and for little May. Plus, Marie/Maria is a very religious name (the Mother of God is Mary, there are several Marys in the Bible, saints etc.) and with Alix's religious devotion, it did seem like an obvious and appropriate name for Maria Nikolaevna. That's just my two cents, though.

I second you completely. But i had seen none referring to May before; and i feel Alix thought of her while naming her daughter, not only to her "beloved" mother in law, LOL

Nonetheless, Marie was named for her grandmother.

In many Christian countries, the name is commonly given to daughters as it is the same name as the mother of Christ.

Significant in this third daughter is that the Dowager Empress was the godmother of Maria Nicholievna.
