Yes it was Helena and not Louise. It was such a slap in the face when Helena was wedded ro Freddy's cousin of Augustenburg (member of the rival family to the Glucksborgs). Alix did not became as friendly to Helena after that. Freddy was handsome but like Betrie under the thumb of his father (mother in Bertie's case).

Well, then it was both. Louise was floated as a suggestion (according to Elizabeth Longford and Jehanne Wake) but shot down by Queen Victoria for fear of antagonizing Prussia.

Pretty sure it was Helena first. Freddy was then in Cambridge and Alix thought it would be nice if he married Helena. QV put her foot down and said "One person from that family (Glucksborg-Danish) is quite enough." Alix accepted defeat but when QV turned around and offered Helena to Christian of Augustenborg, she considered a slap in the face to her family and threatened not to attend the wedding ceremony. It was after much talking before the Wales attended Helena's wedding, but the sisters-in-law was never as close as before. Louise remained a favourite of Alix even after her marriage to Lorne. I don't think she was even aware of the proposal to Freddy if it was even suggested.

Frederick in a photo by Lewis Carroll

This was taken by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) in 1863 at a studio in Badcock's Yard, Oxford. As a fan of Carroll's photography i think this is not at all representative of his best work. However it is neat to think about how he met Freddy!!

Carroll also photographed Prince Leopold, future Duke of Albany, while he was at Christ Church some years later.

This photo, from mid-November 1863, was taken at Carroll's rooms in Oxford off St Adgate's Street. These were the first rooms that he had that afforded him the privacy he felt he needed for backgrounds, room for indoor skylights and a more relaxed setting for children, etc.... Carroll's friend Kitchen had telephoned at 11:30 to say he would be bringing the Prince, then studying at Christ Church, by in an hour. Despite the rush, Carroll took 2 negatives--a 6x5 half-length and an 8x10 full-length. Carroll recorded that the Prince chatted 'amiably' and he found him a 'much brighter specimen' than his royal brother-in-law--Bertie, I presume.

He looked good even though he seemed bored. He was quite a simple man not rather bookish I think.

I thought the future King Frederick VIII read Political Science at Oxford! Where did you read that he went to Cambridge Eric?

He only went a short period of time, starting in October 1863. An old book on Oxford says that he was summoned back to Denmark upon his father's ascension to the throne and the subsequent war with Prussia. The first happened in November 1863, the 2nd a few months later. When exactly Frederick returned, I don't know. There's apparently a stained glass window at Christ Church Hall commemorating the attendance of Edward VII and Frederick VIII.

The friend's name was Kitchin, not Kitchen (my error). The link was that he was not just a friend of Carroll's but had been appointed tutor to Frederick during his stay at Christ Church.

This image is kind of odd. Look how "disgusted" looks Lovisa (no mention she s posing far away from the group)

It was one of about 6 poses (at least) from that sitting. Maybe she was just tired of it all.  :)  There are other poses where she's more integrated into the family positioning.
