OTMA's "Sailor nannies"
« on: April 05, 2012, 07:45:03 AM »
Browsing in the Forum, i found mention of the fact that particular officers on the Standart were assigned to take care of everyone of the girls, so not only Aleksej had his "djadka."
I looked for something precise about it, but found only some mention here and there in threads about other subjects, so i wanted to merge all the infos about it in a single thread, since i haven't undertood very clearly.

Do anyone know the names of everyone of these "sailor nannies" and who to whom were they assigned?
And, BTW, Sablin was for ON and Rodionov for TN, or vice versa?

Thanks evryone.

I think the children , when they were quite small, did have particulsr sailors assigned to them as nannies, or escorts, more like. I don't know if they were necessarily officers, though, since I thought I saw photos of OTMA with simple sailors. I also wouldn't know if they had the same as- signed nanny for each cruise over a period of years, though you would think it would be an advantage to all concerned if dyadki and Grand Duchesses became comfortable with each other through familiarity.

The connection of N.P. Sablin with Olga, and Rodionov with Tatiana I think was more of a mutual agreement for social occasions like picnics and tennis parties and  represented the girls in a more adult stage beyond the nanny/GD , assigned friend/ child, basis of the girls when just kids on the Standart. No names of these nannie sailors have emerged that I am aware of, though there are undoubtedly dozens of families in Russia now with stories  of grandfather Ivan or great-uncle Viktor who befriended a particular Russian Grand Duchess before the Revolution. From the photos I've seen the nannies mostly look like proud young men on special, not  too strenuous duty.

Not too sure about the second photo, if they're sailor nannies or just officers posing with the children, but I'm pretty sure about the first. They don't all appear to be the same men between the two photos.

Those are just the type of photos I had in mind, EmmyLee. And the sailors are enlisted men, not officers. It's quite possible the sailors were different, being assigned as nannies to a GD for any number of possible reasons, including simply no longer being on duty on the Imperial yacht.

could have been an assignment given out per voyage. In the famous 1907 Polar Star footage of the children playing , one can see what appears to be thier sailors on the side watching .  Rodney_G your distinction between nannies and  the later tennis etc. partners is a good one. As the girl's grew, the  needs changed and so did the job

Nikolai Sablin writes about the officers and djadkas in his book Years On Board The Imperial Yacht Standart.
Anastasia’s djadka was a much liked sailor named Бабушкин /Babushkin.
He also names the officers assigned to grand duchesses. Olga’s was N.P. Sablin, he himself (N.V. Sablin) was Tatiana’s, Maria’s was prince and Lt. Nikolai Vadbolski/Вадболский and Anastasia’s was Lt. Aleksei Saltanov.

absolutely, but was that as they grew a bit older, because then they were very young, they seem to be with enlisted men. There is a photo of a tiny Olga being held by a bearded enlisted man ( sailor) then photos of the older chilren with the two Sabins and others...then  the teenage GD's  with officer tennis/dance partners ..so there appears to be three stages. Enlisted men for toddlers, certain officers for the older children..then later   and younger officers of the girl's choosing for tennis and picnics

Is that Rodionov standing near Tatiana in the right hand photo? And what is his first name? Merci

As I see, this is not Rodionov, even not a sailor (and even not a Navy officer;). Annie incorrectly attached this photo to the first two. These men are Count Grabbe (Guard's Cossack's cavalry) and Count Vorontsov-Dashkov (Guard's Hussar's cavalry). Both were very good friends with the Imperial family and often participated in different informal events (like tennis, etc.).

Nicolá! I knew he wasn't a sailor or navel officer ! lol!...I  included his photo to show the procession of officer attendants to the girls over the years  ... indeed they were not always sailors! But thank for the information as always! Just today I was telling someone it was you who taught me the difference between Alexander Alexandrovich Drenteln and Dr. Botkin! =)
