who swindled GD Xenia out of her jewels?

I wonder if the current occupants know anything about Xenia's tenure, houses with famous former occupants often have 'blue placques' put on the wall outside to commerate it. The last london home of Jimmy hendrix had one put up recently. Might be nice to try and get one put up for Xenia at Draycott Place?

I agree with Eddie, old houses should be modernised sensitively, otherwise buy a modern house, I think Americans are much better at this on the whole than Europeans. Its just takes longer.

Maybe Xenia was able to save up some of the allowance allotted to her by King George...

Going from memory didn't she sell of items like the 50+ piece dinner service? And didn't Xenia receive some money from properties belonging to the Tsar in Finland?

Could be, Eddie.  I cannot get to my books  now, as the library is undergoing renovation [badly needed] but I think GD Alexander mentioned have to go to work- his lecture tours, to make money.
Those Blue Plaques, BTW, cost a lot of money to have put up. One needs supporters to petition the council, especially on historic houses,  and sponsors to put up the money. I doubt Xenia would raise enough interest, especially for such a short stay. Even her grace & favour  would be an act of "defacing Royal Property" so would need special effort to mark that place.

I just looked the address up on Google and seems to the the property of the Spanish Embassy now. Looks like a posh terrace house.

A few photos of 28 Draycott Place! It's not as grand as I had imagined but is a lovely building! There is a date stone further down for 1891. It is now 6 flats.

Thank you for posting the pictures, Eddie. If it is indeed owned by the Spanish embassy, I wonder if they use it as a residency or just income property. Most of those larger homes were converted to flats long ago. Between the wars mainly. It does have a typical "London look".
